I always hear stories about people acting entitled on flights, like seats are just… suggestions. Today happens to be the first time I actually watched it happen in real life. I was already seated when a family came in and took the row next to me. They had booked the middle and the aisle, but somehow managed to spread across all 3 seats by putting their “lap child” in the window seat. I remember thinking, okay… this should be interesting when the actual seat owner shows up. The insistence on the literal creation in 4004 BC is not a traditional doctrine. Christians have long recognized that early Genesis could be symbolic & not a literal history (the text is written in that style, not as history). Thus, we recognize that Genesis describes the interiority of creation & meaning of it while science can explain the process (creation through evolution). Independent of theistic evolution (my view) or Young Earth Creationism (QT), Genesis 1… …shows there is one single creator. …shows the importance of the sabbath. …shows God creates from nothing thus the world is not eternal. …is a polemic against middle eastern paganism: they had good & evil gods make the world through great struggle but YHWH just says “let there be”; and the sun and moon are simply “lights” to avoid divinizing them. …shows YHWH’s wisdom in ordering the world.
