Lauren Sanchez channeled John Singer Sargent’s famous portrait of Madame X, a scandalous painting in its time.
He first painted her with one strap dangling suggestively off her shoulder. After that caused a social uproar, he repainted it.
Not a terribly imaginative reference.

In celebration of WWII VE Day, the New York Historical Museum is displaying one of the most famous American wartime garments—Claire McCardell’s “Pop-over.” The original dress is from my collection and I researched and reconstructed the mitt she’s holding. I’m thrilled!
