Jesse Jackson’s family and Democrats in Congress to allow his body to lie at the U.S. Capitol, saying this honor is reserved for presidents and certain top federal officials. In contrast, Congress previously approved a special resolution allowing conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s body to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda, even though he was not a president or federal officeholder. That contrast sends a painful message about whose lives and sacrifices are deemed worthy of our highest public tributes and highest public honors. This is not about protocol, it is about power and disrespect, a deliberate choice to minimize the legacy of a man who bled for this country’s promise of equality. We will not quietly accept this insult to Rev. Jackson, his family, or the movement he helped build.

🚨Last night, in Minneapolis, federal agents fired green chemical gas into a residential neighborhood after community members showed up to document what was happening on their own block. Let’s be very clear about what that means… This wasn’t a federal courthouse. This wasn’t federal property. This was people standing in the streets where they live… streets lined with houses, apartments, kids, babies, and pregnant people. That green gas didn’t just hit people outside. It spread through the neighborhood, into yards and homes. Agents also threw flash bangs at a family trying to leave because of the smoke, even though they had small children, including a 6-month-old who was later taken to the hospital by ambulance. And, the green gas matters. This isn’t “normal” tear gas. That same green smoke has been documented before… in Portland… where it was used by federal agents to “protect” federal buildings. Independent testing found it contained hexachloroethane, which produces zinc chloride smoke when deployed. The U.S. military stopped using it decades ago because of how toxic it is. Exposure to this gas is linked to burning skin and eyes, coughing, vomiting, chest pain, and serious respiratory injury, with the risk of delayed and long-term lung damage. This is especially dangerous for infants, children, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Now, federal agents are using it in neighborhoods. And on top of that… ICE and other federal agents are not supposed to be doing crowd control in residential areas at all. Their authority is limited to specific federal functions. Crowd control in city streets is not one of them. They do not have blanket jurisdiction to gas neighborhoods because people are in their own neighborhood streets. So what we’re watching is federal agents: • acting outside their role • performing crowd control where they have no jurisdiction • firing toxic green gas into civilian neighborhoods • and exposing families inside their own homes to chemicals that cause real physical harm. This isn’t public safety. This isn’t lawful enforcement. This is the federal government treating American neighborhoods like hostile territory… and using chemical weapons to do it. That should alarm everyone, because there is nothing stopping this from happening in your neighborhood next.

All know that a strong America is the best ally of peace—the world’s avaricious dictators of Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are hesitant to invade and brutalize in the face of 1) American strength and 2) American resolve. Our tepid response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia and Crimea surely contributed to Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine. American strength is greatest when we have friends that stand with us; we must not let economic squabbles fray the bonds of our alliances. American resolve is greatest when we stand with the victims of oppression and invasion. After Russia invaded Ukraine with hundreds of tanks and hundreds of thousands of troops, America - together with Europe - rallied to give Ukraine the weapons and aid to defend itself. Three years later, Russia continues its brutal assault. We must not let personal squabbles weaken our resolve to stand with the freedom fighters and to oppose the authoritarian aggressors. Lasting peace will only be achieved if America demonstrates strength and resolve and if Ukraine is certain that it will not be invaded again. Anything short of that would elicit only temporary celebration; it would open the door to global conflicts that we may be unable to contain.

It was a productive meeting, with discussions focused on strengthening the protection of lives and bringing real peace closer. Earlier, in Paris, after the ceremonies at Notre Dame, I had a long and meaningful conversation with President Steinmeier during a dinner with leaders. We managed to cover many important details. Today in Kyiv, the leader of the German opposition, Friedrich Merz, visited us. Achieving peace requires the involvement of everyone who can help. We need a strong Ukraine for peace to be achieved faster and to be reliable. A strong Ukraine is what Europe, the United States, and all our partners around the world need—those who seek a world without war and want true security for all. To strengthen Ukraine, achieve a just peace more quickly, and prevent the outbreak of new wars, clear security guarantees are needed. Accession to the European Union, an invitation to NATO, Taurus missiles—all these elements could enhance our strength.
