Men’s dating coaches remind me very much of the matchmaker scene in Mulan. Mulan is being told what men want in a woman. Not by a specific man who might actually be interested in her, but by a female gatekeeper enforcing a generalised idea of what makes a woman desirable to men. What’s really striking in that scene is that there are actually no eligible men present in the town at all. The only males are children or elderly. All that pomp and presentation… but for whom, exactly? To please the matchmaker. To gain approval from the women enforcing the standard. And this is essentially what men’s dating coaches do. They teach men how to become attractive according to other men’s idea of “women in general,” not how to actually relate to a real woman in front of them. Which is exactly why it’s such a red flag. The man who goes to the dating coach is almost never learning how to have genuine intimacy. In reality, he ends up performing for a male hierarchy. He’s learning a script that was written and approved by other men. “Women” then becomes an abstraction that has little bearing on an actual human relationship. And when actual women object to the script, the coach always falls back on the same escape hatch: “women don’t know what they want, so ignore them and keep paying me instead.”
