In a world of neverending outrage and terminal online-ness, we need more community. People need to get off their PCs, form small groups to talk with other human beings, and be normal. No more "discourses on the wifejak meme", no more "discussions on media literacy." These things are inconsequential and fleeting. Internet relationships are easily severed at any time and for any reason. Staring at screens is awful for you. Netflix hates you and wishes you were never born. Get some sunlight. Touch another human being, even if it's just a handshake. Experiences are good, but human connection is where it's at. You'll come back from your latest Hawaii trip with a tan, a couple pleasant memories and about $5k poorer. But if you make a local friend that relationship will pay dividends for life. Be unselfish. Put everything into being the best friend and family member you can. Try to become a relatable person. Everyone has niche interests, but think about how you can present those to people who don't share your interest in an interesting way. Consider picking up a non-niche interest. Reach out to your extended family. What have you done to strengthen your relationship with them lately? What are they currently going through? Talk about everything. Talk about the weather if you have to. Talk to an old person. Hold their stories in your heart, you may not get another chance to hear them. Pass their stories on. Create stories in which you're not the main character. They're happening around you all the time, you just have to pick up on them. Consider the future. Consider your legacy. How will people view you when you're gone? Who will feel your absence in their gut? What kind of memories will they have? Will you be the goofy person who always made them laugh, or the dour person always staring at a screen? Make things around you better. Improve something, anything. Restore an antique, or build something new. Make something that will still be around long after you've passed away. Take pride in yourself, and in your work. Add vitality back to the world. Rage against the dying of the light.

When I was a kid, between about 1989 and maybe 1992, ALL I wanted in the whole wide world - wanted it more than perhaps anything I've ever wanted before or since - was a Nintendo Power Glove... But they were basically unattainable in the UK, and we were far too poor anyway. Never really got over it. 😒

@JimJohnOfficial we're locking their access to tech around 2005-2009. psps, our old gbas, nokia or flip phone, digital camera, mp3 player that we vet the music on, and if they're watching TV its when we're nearby and watching too. maybe a heavily monitored laptop around the age 14.

i don't bother my husband while he's gaming so when it's my turn he won't bother me. im excited to have more kids and i hope they like pokemon, because with enough of the we can have a home bracket tournament.

George Carlin infected Gen-X with this horrible apathy towards everything. The statue doesn’t just mock nationalism but belief itself. Any ideology, any group, any loyalty. It’s like they think they’re the first person to discover ideologies or positions all have tradeoffs, and because they’re not perfect it’s better to stand against them all. It’s as childish as it is false. A few minute conversation with anyone who puts on this front will quickly reveal which ideologies they feel are above such critiques. When exposed that John Stewart wry smile turns into the most vitriolic anger you’ve ever seen.

@threenotes_jp Thanks to all the people saying it's no longer 6 days. I visited as a teen in 2006 and my host dad worked for Ito En. I only saw him first thing in the morning and on Sundays. I always thought it must be hard to maintain a house and family like that.

my boomer take is that cars should be started with a key. turning a key feels good. pushing a button to start the engine has no juice and just feels weird to me.
