3 FEBRUARY 1943 - FOUR CHAPLAINS DAY On 3 February 1943 a torpedo struck the transport ship USAT Dorchester as it sailed across the North Atlantic; as the ship sank, 4 U.S. Army Chaplains earned a place in Army History through their efforts to save as many lives as possible.

On Feb. 3, 1943, four brave @USArmy Soldiers, John P. Washington, Alexander D. Goode, George L. Fox, and Clarke V. Poling, sacrificed their lives to save fellow service members. Today, on #FourChaplainsDay, we honor their courage and selfless sacrifice.

3rd Infantry Division presents Silver Star award to 107-year-old #WorldWarII veteran ➡️ spr.ly/6014MewEC The 3rd Infantry Division presented a Silver Star Medal to Staff Sgt. Harold A. Nelson for his service in World War II from Nov. 1942 to June 1944.

Murphy died in a plane crash on May 31, 1971, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 46. His grave remains one of the most visited graves in the cemetery. 4/4
