Referee Michael Oliver didn’t spot the incident, and VAR Tony Harrington also did not recommend a review. If the same challenge had been made by a United player, it could easily have resulted in a red card and a three-match suspension. The deliberate inconsistency is becoming hard to ignore.

🚨 JUST IN: United are appealing the ban on the grounds Martinez did not pull with force and was challenging for the ball, but the PGMO are confident the rulebook was applied correctly. Referees told clubs at the start of the season hair pulling would be seen as violent conduct. There is a chance Martinez could get his standard 3 game ban reduced, but this is viewed as unlikely. If you speak casual fans who don’t watch enough football games, their opinion would match with Matt. Many people who don’t watch enough games think United get majority of the decisions in their favor. This narrative cannot be farther from the truth. I watch all the United games. There are so many decisions that go against us on a consistent basis. I also watch many more PL games. Other big clubs get subjective decisions in their favor all the time. If you really want to make an opinion on this topic, watch more football games. This would be my suggestion to people like Matt.

@TimesSport @GregorRoberts0n I totally agree with your take on VAR. One of the problems I see now is we have referees who have become poor at making decisions live during a match knowing they have the back up of VAR. This would need to massively improve if VAR was be removed from matches
