Last week I talked about correlation vs causation… Good days vs Bad days… As an ex inter county S&C coach the one thing I do not miss is the fickle nature of it all… 🤥 The reality is it’s a results driven business where you don’t really get one without the other…

Just watching/reading @Gareth_Sandford excellent newsletter/vlogs and it reminded me of the absolute truth - you don’t condition in 1 year This year has seen managements and journalists everywhere report a lot more about the GAA team who got or lost this “highly respected S&C Coach” as if it was some sort of critical determination performance. It’s shouldn’t be. Gaelic Games, especially football, is full of hybrid and endurance profile athletes. This aerobic capacity and efficiency of good athletes takes years to base and around 3 years to nail. I can tell you now we can count on one hand what counties/teams are doing that and that patient. And they have people in situ. You can layer on in one year, you can have a positive effect. But if there is dramatically different stuff going on then something is wrong, at either end. I won a Senior All Ireland with Cork Camogie and to be honest my approach was to “not fuck them up”. Keep it simple and layer on a bit. The previous 2 years they had @Fit_For_Golf who met me and ran me through what he did. That’s professionalism and normal adult practice to be honest. The girls more than anyone benefitted from Mike and then so did I, and the person the year after would as well, and we met and shared also. In a system the S&C shouldn’t be the determining factor. S&C only becomes a factor when it’s terrible or there is obvious physiological gaps. The commentary from Managers and Journalists only highlights how little they actually know about what they are talking about, and very often these are personality contests. Not about actual development at all. Some are clearly using it to deflect their own underperformance.

Aerobic detraining happens quicker than you think. In just 5-7 days without exposure to critical speed stimuli, Your body's blood lactate response to a given speed begins to rise. The result: performing the same level of effort becomes more physiologically demanding. And has significant implications for performance capacity: In team sports, it becomes harder to repeat and recover high-speed efforts over extended periods. For individual athletes, maintaining speed and power during the finishing sprint becomes more challenging.
