Came to say that I had a very nice swim in Puerto Morelos this morning. Can't believe I'm coming back to a frozen lake in a few hours.

🚨 A student in the US just discovered MILLIONS of new space objects. The astronomy world was recently shaken by a discovery from an unexpected source: a teenager still in high school. Matteo Paz, a student from Pasadena, utilized archival data from NASA’s retired NEOWISE mission to bring 1.5 million invisible cosmic objects into the light. During a stint at Caltech’s Planet Finder Academy, and mentored by astrophysicist Davy Kirkpatrick, Paz took a novel approach to data analysis. He built a unique machine learning model capable of sifting through a staggering 200 billion infrared records. In a span of only six weeks, his AI detected subtle patterns that human analysts had missed, identifying everything from distant quasars to exploding supernovas. Paz’s findings were so robust that they earned him a spot in the prestigious The Astronomical Journal and a position as a research assistant at Caltech. His work does more than just populate star maps; it provides specific coordinates for the James Webb Space Telescope to investigate further. This breakthrough highlights a growing trend where fresh perspectives and AI tools allow young researchers to make historic scientific impacts from the classroom.

Great engines. Unlike the 737 NG, the 737 MAX can taxi around on a single engine at almost any weight (as long as it’s not uphill). The downside is the start time. The LEAP engines have to be “motored” at around 23% N1 for an eternity compared to the old engines. The process is automatic, but it can take almost a minute of motoring before fuel can be added during the start process. It’s occasionally an issue if you single-engine taxi & don’t guess correctly how much time you’ll have until getting cleared for takeoff…you may have to ask for a little extra time… …because in addition to the start time, both the NG & LEAP engines require a warm up period of 3 minutes after start (5 minutes on the first start of the day) before you can apply takeoff thrust. The LEAP engines require a cool-down period, however, which isn’t the case with the NG. It’s 3 minutes after reducing to idle on landing before you can shut them down. This can be a problem if you are close to the gate after clearing the runway. In the video, once they take the runway you hear the engine noise increase as the throttle is moved up, then a pause before the noise gets louder. The standard procedure during takeoff is to push the throttles up to about 40% N1, let them stabilize & check the instruments before advancing to takeoff thrust (you engage the autothrottle by pushing the TOGA button at around 70% & let the autothrottle set the final takeoff thrust setting calculated earlier; the pilot not flying may do fine adjustments if it doesn’t quite get there). This is all usually done on the roll…you’re not holding the brakes or anything.

@thekevingrimm Hi! Is there a substantial advantage of running in zone 2 instead of zone 1 (for "easy miles" and building a bigger engine)? I find the zones a bit confusing. In my case, even zone 2 can feel taxiing on the legs over many miles, but zone 1 feels ideal for "easy" days

The simplest way for young parents to get faster might be…. run with your kids Stroller jog w/ the munchkin @ ~120bpm Forces you to go slow, which builds your engine while giving Mom some PTO As long as they don’t ask you to pick up the pace…

@BlueSpotScience Does this mean that what the Internet running community calls Zone 2 (easy run pace) is actually Zone 1 in the sports science terminology?

By the way, I really liked Bad Bunny's latest album and I'm very curious to know who else is going to perform with him during the half time show. However, I can totally see why many aren't exactly looking forward to his performance, and might want to ruin it for everyone.

I certainly speak less Spanish in public and keep a very ambiguous appearance to try to avoid potential conflict with maga. That doesn't really bother me, but the lack of bilingual education in the US feels like such a missed opportunity.

I really like the running recommendations I often get on this app, + the sports talk and been able to get to catch up with what's going on in my country. But it comes at the cost of an increasingly annoying background noise that I wish didn't exist.
