@LauraRbnsn Have you read James Barr's "Fundamentalism?" He described this attitude extremely accurately in 1978. Of course, it wasn't dominant in national politics at the time.

@BenS_MTG I don't know all the cards and they're SO much easier to read on an arena stream.

Should my next stream/draft video be arena bo3 or magic online draft leagues. I'm not doing bo1, I really dislike it, but I'm open to either mtgo for better opponents or arena for better program.

@EdwinaPJones @also_psyche I enjoyed Katabasis after hating Babel (overly didactic) but it's not on the level of the other books in this thread. There's a lot of intertextuality with Dante, but I'm not sure I think she really understood him.

@also_psyche My daughter really enjoyed Katabasis but is more ambivalent about Kuang’s other books

If you know of a modern novel which engages so deeply with the classics & its philosophical and literary forebears such that rereading it is always a new, rich experience, you should share it with me. My list is pretty short (Piranesi, Secret History, Till We Have Faces)

@AliceFromQueens I think Tesla self-driving being so bad, especially in comparison to the rhetoric about it, made a lot of people justifiably skeptical. Waymo is a fundamentally better technology

Self-driving cars are like the new weight loss drugs Their value is so large, so obvious, and so scalable, that we can confidently predict their triumph regardless of knee-jerk cultural resistance and their wildly exaggerated downsides.
Ethan Mollick@emollick

It seems like there is not enough of a policy response to the fact that, with 57M miles of data, Waymo’s autonomous vehicles experience 85% less serious injuries & 79% less injuries overall than cars with human drivers. 2.4 million are injured & 40k killed in US accidents a year

@joshtpm @LPDonovan @samstein The implied audience for mainstream coverage is moderate democrats, so the media provides narratives that antagonize/interest that audience. The media also learned all the wrong lessons from 2016 and sees a weak Trump as an invincible political force.

I think more generally GOPs always think they're winning. Goes beyond polls frankly. What's notable this year is that real Dem leads remain "toss ups" while real Trump leads mean landslides. Some of that is understamdable caution given earlier polling misses. But it goes beyond that to a more general tilt in coverage.

I continue to find the polls less notable than the reaction to them. Had NBC come out with Trump +5 nationally, there would be a Prozac shortage on the Dem side. This morning, it's the inverse, and Republicans don't seem too worried that they may lose a winnable race

“press overall done very good job covering Trump” is an absolutely insane statement. So we’re back to the “NYT is a great newspaper” bs.

Donald Trump is 78 years old and in a state of profound cognitive decline. He should end his campaign immediately. Retweet if you think that Trump is unfit to serve!

Trump spent months after the 2020 elex telling millions of supporters that if they didn't help him reverse his legitimate loss, they'd lose their country. That led to 1/6. And for the last three years, you have offered nothing but craven, sycophantic apologetics for all of it.
JD Vance@JDVance

Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination.

While I hope the writers' and actors' strikes in the US succeed and are resolved as soon as possible, I also hope it leads to the production of shows where pigs and horses in human masks deliver scripts written by Netflix executives.
