30 cm of melted snow yielded 19.6 mm of water. The ratio is 15:1 in Paradise of snow to liquid.#nlwx Let's assume it's similar at YYT and across the Metro region. Leads me to believe the measurements by the @navcanada observer at YYT are melted snow equivalent and not actual snow observations. If we take that same ratio, it's likely closer to 26 cm.

⚡️HOW MANY LIGHTNING STRIKES WEDNESDAY NIGHT?⚡️ Wednesday night into Thursday morning (July 30 - 31, 2025) satellites detected 4,338 lightning strikes over and near the Avalon Peninsula! That is a combination of cloud-to-ground and cloud-to-cloud strikes. #nlwx To put that into perspective, I am reasonably certain this region averages well under 1000 strikes (combined) per year. There is a VERY GOOD chance we had more lightning Wednesday night than we've seen in the last several years... combined! In my nearly 13 years of living on the Avalon, I've NEVER seen a lightning event like this. Not in scope (amount) and duration. It was wild! The United States has confirmed that it intends to impose 25% tariffs on most Canadian goods, with 10% tariffs on energy, starting February 4.   I’ve met with the Premiers and our Cabinet today, and I’ll be speaking with President Sheinbaum of Mexico shortly.   We did not want this, but Canada is prepared. I’ll be addressing Canadians later this evening.

As a result of strong winds, causing flying debris, we have some significant amounts of broken glass on Harbour Drive in St. John’s. We ask #nltraffic to avoid Harbour Drive for the next hour so crews can clean the area.

Jimmy Carter’s legacy is one of compassion, kindness, empathy, and hard work. He served others both at home and around the world his entire life — and he loved doing it. @EddieSheerr So thankful for good weather today. I’m flying home from Toronto with Porter. A little delay here at YYZ, but not weather related, so will hopefully get home on time tonight.

@EddieSheerr I’m honestly so sick feeling over this, and I’ve barely slept but a few hours. My in-laws in Vermont were up most of the night as well.

Went to bed expecting to see who won the US POTUS election this morning. Amazed to find out a few states have yet to be called by some sources... Trump is on the cusp of 270 votes (266) and Harris is at 219. (Source is CNN) The only states left to be called are Michican, Wisconsin, Arizona and Nevada however Trump is ahead in all of those states based on current counts. He needs only one of those states to move over 270.
