@SuperSisi Friends first, game second. Online gaming flipped that. People still try to find that - but the physical isolation makes it much harder.

@SuperSisi Massively better. We used to plan LAN parties of 20 people hauling CRTs and their rigs to play Quake and Counterstrike after work. We laughed and yelled and everyone got to hang out together. Now people sit in their basement with a microphone thinking they’re bonding.

Hard to understand why, in 2026, audio quality on phone calls is so bad. Super heavy compression, ultra low bitrates, often hard to make out what people are saying... In a world where everything works over IP, why is the default 8 kilobits per second or some shit?

@davepl1968 Where Robotron: 2084 had a light and sound barrage, I always felt like Tempest had a similar intensity but it felt more composed and more precise. And btw - 3 Tempest machines is a freaking superpower, dude! Respect! I want to get a cocktail machine.

If you're curious what a "Special Interest" is like with ASD, here's an example of mine: Tempest. I own three Tempest machines, an upright, a cabaret, and a cocktail (sit-down) machine. The high score on one of them was set by the game's author at the Atari Christmas Party. I have two spare monitors just in case. I hold the official world record on Tempest using the most difficult settings (Extreme mode). I reverse-engineered, disassembled, and documented the code from the game's ROMs on its motherboard. Next, I then wrote a Reinforcement Learning AI to learn Tempest and exceed my play; it can play indefinitely. I could go on, but I'll spare you the rest and summarize: I really like Tempest.
