After the stock and real estate crash in 2007-8, where Jill and I lost all of our equity and more, we paid off all our debts over the next decade (including a mortgage), and became debt free. This has been one of the best financial decision of our lifetimes. We never went back into retirement funds/stocks - as we lost our shirts in that recession. Fool me once... Do not let debt control your life. If you are working to pay off debt paycheck to paycheck, you are nothing more than an indentured servant. Financial tips: do not buy that new car, unless you can really afford it. Don't get overextended on a mortgage - no matter how much you fall in love with a house. Do not eat out 3x a week - unless you have throw-away money. Entertain at home. Have friends over. Make coffee at home. Garden, take walks or hikes, have game nights - lots of ways to have fun that don't involve $$$. It requires a little will power and control - habit stack good financial habits to save. Do personal audits on your bank statement to see where you money is going. Get financially educated. Save money, buy assets that maintain or grow in value - and don't get into massive debt. Financial security is often directly linked to personal health and happiness.
