Some of our best hires were totally unqualified on paper. They always had the same qualities: entrepreneurial, high agency, smart, mission aligned, and they got shit done. If you’re hiring, especially in early stages, seek out & bet on these people. Don’t over-index on resumes.

Crazy week in LA and SF. Some takeaways: -Every first round is 5M. Pre-seed is non-existent. Committed to two companies, first money in, both 5M. Consistent for the past 14 months. All SF (which is always at a premium) Prices range from 20-50M. We arent paying insane prices but its the range we see most often. -Founders are moving to SF with no network and barely a place to live to increase their chances of success. While it isn’t for everyone, it helps a lot. Housing is a real issue. -Upfront is by far my favorite VC/LP event of the year. Hats off to TX at Fika for bringing together the strongest group of investors of any event all year to his annual dinner. Feels like a family reunion! -Seeing a lot more fintech and consumer companies at seed which is exciting -LPs have a huge appetite for seed funds that lead rounds though not as much for Fund Is unless a very notable spin out -A lot of Series A and B rounds getting done in non-AI native cos founded in 21/22 cohort, refreshing. Had 3 in our portfolio get done this week alone. -Amazing time to be alive and investing!

A Stanford professor analyzed 1,000's of angel investments to find out who's had the MOST unicorns. The results are fascinating. - David Morin tops the list with 23 unicorns - Peter Thiel and Lee Linden follow with 21 each - David Sacks at 20 - Marc Benioff at 19 A few things that stand out: 1) Almost every top angel was a founder or exec at a large tech company first. The clear signal here - they were mostly operators who earned their access. 2) Many co-invested together repeatedly. Thiel, Sacks, and Levchin all overlapped at PayPal and went on to back the same unicorns (Facebook, Airbnb, Palantir Technologies, SpaceX). 3) No women appear in the top 50. Sad. 4) The entry threshold to make this list is 9 unicorns (nuts!). The average unicorns across the top 50 is 13 (more nuts!). I share this for folks to have inspiration to angel invest themselves!
