I’ve really enjoyed working with @Carl_Portman to publish this book. But then, I’ve always preferred & tried to publish books which have some human interest and aren’t just dry analysis. Excited to be releasing another chess title through @steelcity_press after a bit of a break.
Steel City Press@steelcity_press

On Monday we’re publishing Never Mind The Grandmasters by @Carl_Portman. From a Poirot-inspired chess mystery to a chat with Karpov about prisons, via Alekhine’s grave, the book captivates both on and off the 64 squares. Foreword by @gmmds. Pre-order: steelcitypress.co.uk/product/never-…

In France, the “far-left” achieved 25.8% of the vote, 180 seats. The “far-right” 37.1% of the vote, 142 seats. The “centrists” 24.5% of the vote, 159 seats. New Prime Minister’s party: 5.4% of the vote, 39 seats. Concerning.

@AntWadebridge @NealBruceBC …a6 wasn’t intended as a threat but as a defensive move. A 1972 player would have played …a6 so the pawn on a7 is no longer undefended when the a8-rook wants to move, meaning that …Rd8 and …0-0-0 become credible moves. It’s just bad because it misses White’s tactical idea.

@NealBruceBC I can’t believe a 1972 player played a6 believing it was a threat.

We had a complicated position and I thought I was better, but did not find the correct continuation. It’s always easier when you see a puzzle and know there is a win. Find the win that I missed against a 1972 player. 🤔 #chesspunks

@sagadoon Some vandalism is worse, yes, but that doesn’t make one right and the other wrong. It makes one wrong, and the other more wrong.

@JonathanArnott But some vandalism is worse, and some actions garner more public support. Of course people believe their own cause to be just, obviously an obvious huge difference in outside option here. Don't agree, you're in denial.

If you lionise ULEZ opponents’ vandalism, you lose the moral right to demonise Just Stop Oil’s vandalism. And vice versa. Hypocrites - Left and Right - hold contradictory views of thuggish behaviour based on whether or not they happen to agree with the cause.

@sagadoon Vandalism = vandalism. Can argue over which is the greater evil of course. Doesn’t make them good. Of course, the JSO side will be making some argument that they’re trying to save humanity from destruction - and that they’re justified. They’re not, because vandalism is wrong.

@JonathanArnott So not really an equivalence then, plus those getting rid of these camera have large public support, much much more than jso to say the least.

@sagadoon The blocking of roads, yes, you can (reasonably) argue should result in a greater criminal penalty because of the danger to life when ambulances cannot get past.

@sagadoon No. I compare an illegal act of vandalism to an illegal act of vandalism. In a democracy, the correct recourse is to vote out those responsible - not to take the law into our own hands.

Can both be true at once? T20 (and the dreaded Hundred) revolutionised cricket’s image through theatrical modernisation. Yet Test cricket has thrived. Could a modern fast-paced chess product be a gateway drug to the thoughtful, beautiful, traditional game?
Jonathan Rowson@Jonathan_Rowson

No. Much is lost in the name of modernisation. Chess has to be more than breathless excitement and frenetic hand movement. The game is truest to itself when it’s slow, silent, thoughtful, deep and beautiful. Let’s allow it to stay that way.

A whole-life tariff in a UK prison may seem trifling for the sadistic evil of Lucy Letby; the suffering and death inflicted on so many families. Yet if we had the death penalty, a jury might have been scared to convict in a complex case. A vile murderer could have walked free.
