@amelia_headass @DKiSAerospace @thunderf00t Hahahahha, you are still trying to build an argument over the word 'everyone'. Even the Rooskies learned after 4 failures with the N1 (Starship is a new N1 btw) that it wasn't gonna' work. Starship is already the worst total loss program in history.

6th flight of the saturn v landed men on the moon and returned them safely to Earth. THIS is how the 6th flight of starship ended, but the the Musk fans... its an AMAZING SUCCESS!!!!

@Rjaecker Shuttle did not have this capability. Its payload capacity was therefore 1/3 of Energias and less than Energia + Buran too as shuttle had to carry the deadweight of the RS-25’s after external fuel tank was jettisoned.

@Rjaecker The launch system was entirely independent so that it could carry additional payloads (up to 100t to LEO) other than the orbiter. It was a feature, not a bug. Highly recommend the book “Energia-Buran” by Bart Hendrickx and Bert Vis if you really want to learn about the vehicle

This is the Buran, the Soviet Union's answer to the space shuttle. Today I learned that: • It didn't have engines • The launch system is an entirely independent rocket called Energia • The launch system was not reusable at all • The only Buran that launched had no crew and no life support system was even designed for it to accommodate crew • The main compartment could not open Previously I thought this was more advanced than the space shuttle. Boy was I wrong

If it’s wasted budget you’re worried about, you’d be far better off targeting the military industrial complex with your complaints. We spend less than 0.3% of our national budget on NASA, and only a portion of that is for human spaceflight. We’re spending $916 billion on the military this year (greater than the next 10 nations combined) and we’re not even at war… why are you going after space?

@apikijaan @rookisaacman It’s not a zero sum game. You could argue this for literally any field of research & more. Why not pause all funding for the arts and literature? They’re not directly solving earths problems? What about all non-climate related physical sciences?

My daughter just thought of an interesting AI application. Hearing aids that will cancel the voice of individual people you selected because you don’t want to hear them any more. Like a mute button for the real world. 😂

@krassenstein Bro US federal tax revenue went up after Trump lowered the corporate tax rate. It continues to increase

BREAKING: In the midst of our national debt crisis, Trump now says he wants to reduce the Corporate tax rate to just 15%. Trump has already reduced the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% last term. How did corporations utilize the savings? Instead of investing in growth or increasing employee wages, they allocated a record $1 trillion to stock buybacks the following year. Stop this madness. Help the middle and lower classes and not the wealthy corporations and shareholders. And please reduce our national debt.

@GaryMarcus @ylecun @AIatMeta Will granting drivers licenses grant widespread access to death agents? In 2021 alone, road injuries accounted for 1.35 million deaths globally. What about cigarettes? Cigarettes kill 8 million people a year, including 1.3 million non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke…

@NPCollapse Holding back tech progress b/c of a threat that hasnt been experimentally proven to be real yet seems like a very bad idea to me. I don’t see how AI doomerism is any different than all the other apocalyptic predictions that cropped up as a result of tech advancements in the past.

We should all stop scaling immediately. RSP is not stopping, it is a way for Anthropic to keep scaling. That's bad. Your company's pitch deck is to scale and race to models 10x more powerful than OpenAI. That's really bad.
Evan Hubinger@EvanHub

@NPCollapse What is your actual objection to RSPs? I've seen you saying a bunch of very public very negative stuff but basically no actual rationale for why the idea of evaluation-gated scaling is a bad one.

@galopujacy_jez @peterrhague Also Chertok hadnt made a single other controversial claim in his memoirs. In fact, he spent more time on their failures as that wasn’t publicized before. He must have a reason for implying it was cheaper here.

@galopujacy_jez @peterrhague shuttle & just submitted the one that confirmed the militarys POV. This is also confirmed by Chertok in Rockets and People Vol 4 (as you can see in the image above).

@peterrhague I read “It cost more to insert payloads into space using the reusable system [space shuttle] than using expendable launch vehicles. That's where we beat out the Americans” as him saying that they were able to achieve a decrease in cost over expendable vehicles, no?

@JordanPeterj I don’t think he is saying that Buran is cheaper there - he is saying that Soviet launchers in general are

@peterrhague Chertoks memoirs are considered the most in-depth & reliable primary sources on the USSR’s space program & personally I found it notable for how much of his memoir he dedicated to discussing failures rather than successors. I dont think I saw a single other hot take in his books

@peterrhague So I finally had time to pick up and finish Vol 4 of Rockets and People by Boris Chertok and stumbled upon this part where he briefly touched upon Buran + Energia. He says they were able to make Buran + Energia cheaper than expendable systems… do you know if that’s true?

@peterrhague But thats not anonymity. Not to spark up a discussion on Canada’s freedom protests but merely to point to an example, after Canada invoked the Emergencies Act, it was able to require crowd source websites to hand over information on people to Canadas financial intelligence agency

This isn’t bad at all. AI is just going to make the bot problem worse, so at some point this will have to happen on all platforms. Might be nice if someone could purchase a single ID verification they could take to every site though.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

@xDaily Correct, read for free, but $1/year to write. It’s the only way to fight bots without blocking real users. This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be 1000X harder to manipulate the platform.

@peterrhague I understand & agree with what youre saying. But recently someone pointed out to me that throughout history, some of the most influential people published anonymously out of fear of retribution. What might we lose down the road if we make that impossible?

@peterrhague Did you know Benjamin Franklin used to publish letters anonymously using the pen name “Silence Dogood”? Korolev did the same thing in the USSR using the fake name “Prof. Sergeyev”, Mishin used “Prof. Vasileyev”, Chertok used “Prof. Yevseyev”. Those works had a lot of value.
