I'm going to cry. I'm seriously going to cry right now. I can't be a tutor at Liberty University where I attend and and pursuing my doctor of philosophy in English but they won't let me be a tutor and make some money because I live in Michigan and that is a restricted state where they're not allowed to hire people and I don't know why.

@eileenwanita I imagine the policy varies from university to university. But the truth of the matter is the tutoring office of any given place, like as not, will always be happy to have someone available and on the books for such gigs. Also don't forget possibilities at community colleges.

I'm sitting here gobsmacked and discombobulated because I don't know what to do now. Can I apply to other universities to be a tutor even if I'm not a student? Because I thought in order to be a tutor at a university you had to be a student. I just don't know. I don't know anything. I just live here.

@JasonWMizer The problem being that to have buckets of money I have to sell stacks of books, and that requires marketing which requires buckets of money and I think I see a sort of a loop here.

If I had buckets of money, I would pay someone to market my books. This stuff is hard and I'd rather be writing. I can't be alone here, right?

Westercon, one of the oldest science fiction conventions in North America, is voting on a motion to repeal its own bylaws and shut down permanently. The motion reads: "If the consensus is that Westercon no longer has a purpose and should retire, the most orderly way to do so would be for the members of Westercon to vote to repeal its own bylaws." Westercon was founded in 1948 with 77 fans who couldn't afford to travel east to Worldcon. It ran every year for over 70 years. Westercon 74 in 2022 drew 159 badge pickups. AggieCon went on hiatus. ConDor went on hiatus. Loscon struggles. Readercon cratered and never recovered. The regional convention circuit is contracting across the board. Three causes: aging fanbase, political alienation of half the fandom, and commercial megacons absorbing the audience. The convention circuit that built modern science fiction fandom is dying. Is this sad or is it a good thing?

@eileenwanita The key to help usually lies in one's own hands: Step 1. Buy an old reel-to-reel tape recorder and some long play reel-to-reel tapes in a junk store. Step 2. Record the offenders. (You may need to rig a microphone up.) Step 3. Play when they next have relatives or dinner party.

Americans don't understand that we did not lose trust in Trump. We never trusted him. We lost trust in the American people not to elect people like Trump & lost trust in US institutions to reign a president like Trump in if he hurt US allies. Both people + institutions failed.
