You are what you eat! Macrophages activate different gene expression (and functional) programs to IL-4 based on the type of apoptotic cell they ingested! Cool stuff by Bosurgi lab @ScienceMagazine science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

#ScienceSaturday While many of you have heard of the microbiome which describes the bacteria in our body, have you heard of the #mycobiome? This refers to the fungi that can be found in our gut as well as in tumors. In a recent report in @Cancer_Cell, investigators found that the fungus Aspergillus sydowii could be found in human lung adenocarcinomas and correlated with a worsened outcome. In experimental mouse models of lung cancer, this organism induced the tumor infiltration of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) which inhibited tumor reactive T cells. These findings may allow us to improve outcomes in cancer patients by targeting specific fungi.

Job Alter! I'm currently offering at least three PhD or Postdoc positions! We have several projects with robust preliminary data to choose from. Our primary focus will be on studying the tumor micro- and macroenvironment in the context of therapy resistance!

I think we need to talk about how devastating this cancer microbiome refutation paper from @StevenSalzberg1 and colleagues is. It really speaks to how devoid of critical thinking and intellectual depth our glam publishing ecosystem has become. 1/n biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
