@ThePabloMcKay @Xchelcito @Rainmaker1973 I feel like DNA is both data storage and a functional unit though? DNA forms structures and to say it is analogous to metadata, or a “language” is an oversimplification. That said, could you describe why you think it can’t store the information to create this (not “for” this) ?

@ATinyGreenCell I think some ideas in biology can be considered genius? Many of these aren’t from biologists, but are applied to biology (Physicists, like Francis Crick). I also think the determination required to reliably publish good data is greater than genius. (Just my opinion!)

There is no grand genius when it comes to biology. No predisposition for bioresearch greatness. No BioMozarts. No BioJordans. The challenges are too massive and any semblance of extreme competence comes from very hard work and a LOT of luck. Natural talent for bio is myth.

Watching my first Piers Morgan show (podcast?) with @EricRWeinstein … I feel most scientists should watch it purely for the chat about peer review 📖 ✅

@poojaasanwal Tips: - Outsource all cooking (eating out healthy can be expensive but thats it). Or meal prep all weekday meals on Sunday - Have enough clothes so you only do washing 1 day a week (preferably same day you are training twice or cooking for the week, for efficient use of time

I'm seriously genuinely asking this - Is there anyone who is focusing well on fitness(gym), work(8 hrs a day in the office), side projects, life and fun(hobbies) while also getting 8 hours of sleep everyday? Is that even possible??

The platypus is possibly the weirdest animals. It’s a mammal but lays eggs, its duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed and venomous. It has electroreceptors for locating prey, eyes with double cones, no stomach, and 10 chromosomes. It's fluorescent and glows under UV light.

Short read phage genome assembly pipeline: github.com/JoshuaIszatt/p… - A bit more complicated for short reads... are configuration files really the best way?

I think this is BIG. MutS protein recognizes mismatches in DNA. AlphaFold3, when given the MutS sequence and long DNA with the mismatch, finds the mismatch and models the complex in the correct conformation.
Jan Kosinski@jankosinski

@rfleiro You won't believe... Left - crystal structure of MutS bound to G:T mismatch, in red (PDB ID: 1E3M). Right - AlphaFold3 model with longer and different DNA and A:C mismatch, in red... It managed to find the mismatch?? 🤯The models are here: oc.embl.de/index.php/s/eJ…

@milja001 Great tool, I’m just wondering how analyses like these (VIRIDIC included) compare to network based tools like vContact2 ? - Clustering phage genomes using an “all vs all” network seems more sensitive to me than average nucleotide identity?

Provides ANI similarity used by ICTV to classify phages. Then extracts the Genus and or species information from the ICTV VMR . Provides output if phage is a current species, new species, or is representative of a new genera Install via conda github.com/amillard/tax_m…

@kirk3gaard @rrwick @GB13Faithless If sequencing is non deterministic and the reads are from a population of bacteria rather than an individual cell (consensus sequence by my understanding), why are most tools for analysis not designed to run on QC reads directly? Computing limits? Any feedback appreciated!

@rrwick @GB13Faithless How far are do you think we are from automated flagging of assemblies that are "fine" or need manual curation? I assume many isolate collections will be sequenced these years and people are unlikely to do the manual steps of Trycycler at scale. #Autocycler
