I couldn’t understand the outrage over celebrity GoFundMe pages until I realized I was reasoning from a culture where Mabugo, communal financial support for a grieving family, isn’t about need but belonging. Wealth doesn’t exempt you from being held by your community. In societies with established welfare systems, the frame shifts. It is interesting that what is considered solidarity in one moral economy can read as injustice in another.
