'The Skylark', by John Clare, on his 230th birthday:
'The rolls and harrows lie at rest beside
The battered road; and spreading far and wide
Above the russet clods, the corn is seen
Sprouting its spiry points of tender green,
Where squats the hare, to terrors wide awake,
Like some brown clod the harrows failed to break.
Opening their golden caskets to the sun,
The buttercups make schoolboys eager run,
To see who shall be first to pluck the prize—
Up from their hurry, see, the skylark flies,
And o'er her half-formed nest, with happy wings
Winnows the air, till in the cloud she sings,
Then hangs a dust-spot in the sunny skies,
And drops, and drops, till in her nest she lies,
Which they unheeded passed—not dreaming then
That birds which flew so high would drop agen
To nests upon the ground, which anything
May come at to destroy. Had they the wing
Like such a bird, themselves would be too proud,
And build on nothing but a passing cloud!
As free from danger as the heavens are free
From pain and toil, there would they build and be,
And sail about the world to scenes unheard
Of and unseen—Oh, were they but a bird!
So think they, while they listen to its song,
And smile and fancy and so pass along;
While its low nest, moist with the dews of morn,
Lies safely, with the leveret, in the corn.'
My daughter lives in Brighton. One day last month we climbed up into the Downs, and all the way we saw and heard the skylarks rising from the fields around us. I'd told her it was my favourite John Clare poem, so when we reached the top of Black Cap we stopped, and read this poem aloud to them.

@SeaSpitfires
@Airfix An Airfix 1:72 Spitfire. The canopy had glue finger prints all over it, and I was only allowed three paints so it had a green propeller but I loved it. The smell of humbrol paints transports me back to it without fail.
@NickHewitt4 Ah man, I love a good pillbox 👍. I too used to keep my parents waiting when ever we walked along Aberdovey beach. Sadly all washed away now.
Before I leave the military history of St Martha’s I really have to post these four pillboxes from the GHQ line, all beautifully sighted to cover each other’s arcs! When I was a kid I used to delay my parents for hours while I crawled in & out of them - sadly all bricked up now.
So I just got back from a few days with my mum and went for a walk up to St Martha’s Church near Guildford. Like all churchyards there’s some great military history if you spend a bit of time looking, but the stories at St Martha’s really are amazing!
@DrTrevorDines Dont forget the daffodils, I once drink the water some cut daffodils had been standing in by accident 🤦♂️. It did make me rather ill, but i survived.
On a more serious note it is a rather ridiculous story Aunty.
I’m owed nothing by Policing and I owe Policing nothing back.
I have given you so much and all you do is ask for more.
No more pay, no more time, yet you keep asking.
And I’m told always; it’ll be better and it never is.
So why would we stay? Huh? 🤷🏼♂️
#ThinBlueLine 😂🤷🏼♂️👀😉🚨
@SaveOldSarum@jbanningww1@CWGC That's a pitty, after all the selfless sacrifice was for the people of France, amongst others. I'm equally sure its not a reflection on the depth of gratitude of people on the continent though.
@JprTaylor@jbanningww1@CWGC From when I spoke to the team in Arras when I visited a few months ago, they said EOHO isn't allowed in France due to their laws on volunteering.
An unkempt & disappointing Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery. Weeds everywhere & all in need of a good mow. The usual suspects will come out to defend the commission, but really @CWGC, this is pretty poor. We can all see it.

@MarcLaurenceau Until you stop and think about it, you dont consider things like: what to do with the dead servicemen, how to identify them, how to inform people what has happened to there loved ones, how to clear up the areas that were fought over. Interesring & sad photos.
In between each ashes series I always forget how much I love listening to ashes test match special.
It’s made all the more lovely by not knowing a thing they’re talking about
#shitoff has started! Added tools from accurate armour, drilled out the 30cal and some plastic card to fill the void Aboyne the wheels. Hope to have her built by the weekend. @RedFiveModels@almurray@WeHaveWaysPod
