@Dodders75 John - your graphs end with 2025, not this year? If they do run to 2026, highest temps have been after the 23rd. Extreme max temps have exceeded those from 1944 narrowly I think at 3 of your sites (Soton now closed) - from memory. This is not evidence to dismiss climate change.

The late May to early June 1947 heatwave, equivalent to today's weather, is recorded in the few long-term stations, including Wisley, Southampton, Oxford, and Rothampstead. This week’s heatwave is rare but not unprecedented. It has nothing to do with climate change.

Her profile gives a clue as to her background. Met degrees should not be a prerequisite for comment (I'd fail on that score, as you know!) but all I think we should expect is an ability to engage in logical thinking, to weigh up all the evidence - sadly absent all too often.
Paul Knightley@PaulKnightley

@JulianMayes @KathyConWom Who's 'Kathy' and what met. degree, or similar, does she hold? From which uni?

@TakeThatClouds @jemmm85517813 I'm the same. Around 1990 I helped run several field courses to Sheffield and enjoyed bringing a group of students to the met site and receiving a tour from the museum staff. Trouble is that was so long ago when the modern era of gl warming was just starting. [Feels old].

@JulianMayes @jemmm85517813 I know that location well, I used to go past Weston Park every day at university. I do wonder why they put the solar panels so close to the screen though.

The UK just recorded its ‘hottest ever May day.’ At Heathrow Airport, next to a runway full of jumbo jets. The same trick they pulled in 2022 at RAF Coningsby while fighter jets were landing. This is how the climate scare machine works. conservativewoman.co.uk/must-every-sun…

@KathyConWom The record was at Kew Gardens where there were no runways full of jets. Urban met sites usually in parks, cooler than the urban fabric. For airfields, observations have been taken there since generally the 1940s, for obvious reasons! Total distortion in your post I'm afraid.

@TakeThatClouds @jemmm85517813 The site itself is excellent - that enclosure IS to modern standards! Yes there are different WMO gradings but before people start quoting theoretical 'errors' they should examine how the Sheffield site compares with nearby rural sites (every day).

You are missing the point. The sites were not set up to modern standards but they have been in the same place for a very long time, so they provide a continuous record. That is surely much more useful than scrapping all the old stations and starting afresh with entirely different locations!

#JerseyCI temp near 34C with CB & t/storm to west. Airport observer has not seen it! Last week highest ever May temp - 28.9C. At 2:40pm today it’s 33.9C, so 5deg higher and still rising. Historic, epic, awesome – choose your own word! @Jersey_Met @MeteoBretagne

@Stewart09322559 @Hudsonweather Most of the warming at Sheffield and elsewhere in Europe has taken place since the late 1980s. Sheffield did most of its growing well before then. Also we are discussing day max temps here - much of urban warming affects night min temps - as I say day after day here!

Sheffield Weston park yesterday hit 32.2C, hotter than any day during the summer of 1976 that climate sceptics always like to talk about. And it’s only May. And no, the site (below) is not in the middle of the city centre either !

@wibblyteapot Heathrow - The weather station is placed in a grassy area, well away from the direct blast of jet engines and heat reflected from concrete. Kew gardens - The station is located on a large, open lawn away from buildings, trees, and glasshouses.

@LondonSnowWatch Yes, hating it - but I have the misfortune to live almost in Heathrow - Teddington - Kew triangle. Generally recognised that it is the first heatwave of the year that's the worst for health - we acclimatise a bit later in summer.

@ClimateRealists A few points if we are climate realists; Urban heat islands are slight by day - it is at night they develop. There are many other climate stations Rural sites usually comparable eg Chertsey Temps in decently exposed urban sites do matter - 10 million ppl live in Gtr London!

Whether it’s Kew Gardens or Heathrow Airport, they are both placed in the same Urban Heat Island vicinity. It’s just a question of one or the other, being hotter than the other.
Met Office@metoffice

Today has been the hottest day in May on record with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 34.8°C - exceeding the previous highest May temperature in the UK by a full 2 degrees Celsius🌡️ This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May📈

@TheSnowDreamer Anyone would think that there were no other climate stations in and around London! If only people would take the trouble to go beyond the headlines.

@wanstead_meteo @Petagna While I'm having a general rant about this (blame the heat), Gordon Manley noted that there had been breaks in the SJP records in earlier decades. BUT, then the clim sites at Regents' Pk, LWx Centre and Kensington Gdns were available as cen London substitutes.

The St James's Park May max record of 31.7C set on 29th 1944 would quite possibly have been broken today. Are records (that go back to 1912) for that site still be taken but not yet released to the public? @Petagna

@wanstead_meteo @Petagna I'm sure that cctv is planned. Marco, it would have been useful if the Royal Parks been required to keep the met station in the prominent place it used to have in the centre of the park, better for obs. btw, I think the site started in 1903, initially under the name Westminster.

@LyneMatt @Petagna For balance I should add to previous messages that at 3pm Heathrow has romped ahead of other sites, now over 31C. No point quoting temperatures now - let's see what the max temps are. No doubt the news programmes will quote an hourly temp as the definitive temperature for the day

@LyneMatt @Petagna Steady now - let's compare Heathrow with neighbouring sites. At 2pm the hottest offic site was in Bushy Park (Teddington) at 30.0C. Observing site in the middle of a field. Heathrow's tarmac affects the ovnt temps, not usually daytime. (Heathrow only 0.1C cooler though 😁).

@Harry_Hardrada "Amateur" observers were often the most dedicated. You call it a funny site - there's a case for explaining daytime warmth there (orographically) but I'm sure you know that. Met Office will inspect it and approve it. I wonder if the Tunbridge Wells climate stn was 'funny' too?
