Finance is such a small fraction of what the technology is capable of. Not to mention the most contentious, crowded, politically entrenched and institutionalized of all industries. With a technology that can impact nearly all corners of networked communication why only focus so on finance?

Onchain founders are getting funded by @ycombinator They just put out a new request for onchain startups The future of finance is being built in crypto: Stablecoins, tokenized assets, trading, apps, AI agents, and more

I’m kind of over decks for startup pitches. Notion writeups > decks. Writeups force clarity, they select for better investors, and honestly they have become a signal of higher quality founders. Unless what you're building is extremely visual, ditch the deck and do a doc.

@thetrocro I don't disagree. I'm more asking, if you ran an app on bitcoin would it inherit those values? and would that have value?

@Juliun_b Some of the features are not due to the technology at all. The copycats duplicated the tech but not the above features. Pretty compelling evidence.

@thetrocro agreed, many of the features of bitcoin you outlined are properties of the technology Not of the cryptocurrency. Does the Network make Bitcoin Valuable, or does Bitcoin Make the Network Valuable? Other than the crypto use case... couldn't other use cases inherit this value?

@Juliun_b "Blockchain technology" is a necessary but not sufficient condition for bitcoin's value.

@thetrocro Is Crypto valuable because Blockchain technology is valuable and it inherits that value? The Bitcoin Network itself has these propoerties as well, what does this mean for messages on that network that also inherit these properties?

"But they all use cryptography! That's why it's called 'crypto'!" Yeah... that's not really what matters. It's the neutrality, the fair launch, the fixed supply schedule, the decentralization, the true permissionlessness, the actual irreversibility, the time-tested security, etc

I'd disagree on the "preventing double spending" requirement (dep. on blockchain) This assumes that you're trying to either modify the balance of a users account or interacting with transfer functions within a smart contract. Blockchains are more than only the transfer function. Your requirement implys that the only possible usecase of a blockchain can involve calling an arbitrary function. (i'm differentiating between double spend vs replay)

What technological problem does blockchain tech solve? 99% of people can't give an acceptable answer. Try it… Got your answer? The answer is only correct if it mentions "preventing double spending". > But what does that have to do with claimed blockchain use cases? Nothing.

yeah the superchain is cool but what do we call it when we try to unify all these different interop layers? do we call it the hyperchain

if you're throwing a party... you can market it... you can get attention, commitments, activity, and ask people to bring something. During the party... pretty pointless to try and get attention... after the party... its pretty lame to talk about how much fun it was... I dont think it delivery of the product... its the fact that they dont have a next bigger thing (how could they) to capture the headspace of the market thats finely tuned for speculation. Its a systemic issue, and frankly we should be asking ourselves how to achieve sustainable growth in our industry without token speculation, the answer is probably delivering value beyond the investment opportunity.

@0xstark @Etherealize_io Is this saying that Eth, with ~33M staked, is securing $200B with $100B in collateral? (of which only ~$33B would be needed to prevent transactions from being finalized)? Should Eth be worth a lot more.... or should we be securing less?

I agree, a lot of these individually are easier, but its only part of the use experience: Wallet step for example requires that you: 1. Fund that wallet (meaning) ---Have a bank account ---Send funds to a CEX you're registered to use ---Buy a Native token ---Transfer that token to your wallet ---And if anything goes wrong.... thats 100% on the user

Controversial opinion: Crypto has amazing UX. You just can't see it because you've accepted bureaucracy as normal. -Getting a wallet is easier than a bank account -Starting a DAO is easier than a fund -Sending crypto is easier than setting up payroll

@0xDesigner you're right, tokens get attention, but those same economics directly compete with the utility of the technology, ease of onboarding, scalability (and frankly security). I think we can all envision a future where those tradeoffs don't exist without abstraction.

the hard truth is chains will never be abstracted unless the thing that aggregates them has a token with perfect distribution. chains have tokens. and tokens have bag holders. and bag holders are incentivized to ensure their chain gets volume and attention.
