For my year-in-review piece, wrote about why the movies had me thinking about Mahmoud Khalil, and how the best movies (It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent and One Battle After Another) not only speak to this moment but reinforce each other. theguardian.com/film/2025/dec/…

Here's Phil Lord and Chris Miller on meeting the cynicism of this moment, and a world that seems beyond saving, with the optimism of Project Hail Mary (while lightly nudging our attention to an easter egg in the movie).

Now that I’m back, I am rewatching the DVRed #Oscars at the comfort of my home as I usually do. And my, why does the poor Anne Hathaway always get paired with someone who doesn’t want to be there? (I love you, Anne Hathaway.)

Josh is absolutly right! The best way to describe just how important PTA and the feeling it is to experience his movies and what they mean to other artists was best summed up by Joachim Trier on @TheBigPic back in November.

The way some people (not everyone) are talking about Paul Thomas Anderson like he’s some middling talent that was just discovered yesterday and not one of the industry’s most respected and celebrated filmmakers who’s been making revered masterpieces for thirty years.

@AKlay19 Appreciate that and agree. My own takeaway is that they rarely make films for adults now at the budget levels they used to, case in point Heat and Departed, as well as Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, all made for around the same amount (adjusted for inflation) as OBAA.

@JustSayRad The main point is that it’s rare for films with a budget that big to win Best Picture. If want to adjust for inflation and say that it has the biggest since THE DEPARTED, sure I guess. You’re still going back all the way to 2006.

@JustSayRad Filmmakers should only get access to high budgets if they successfully complete a HEAT-like heist.

Spent yesterday recapping the Oscars & the way it centred children on CBC radio shows across the country, then jumped on Alberta at Noon chatting the year in movies with listeners. Heartened that a caller brought up It Was Just An Accident. Have a listen. cbc.ca/listen/live-ra…

Thinking about children as a running theme throughout these #Oscars, from the opening riff on Weapons where they literally ran through the ceremony, to the children that PTA and Coogler dedicated their awards to, and Autumn's child being whisked down the aisle by Coogler, etc.

It’s a disservice to Michael B. Jordan and all the Best Actor nominees to continue peddling the lie that Chalamet lost because of his comments on opera and ballet. Voting had closed. Jordan deservedly won because his performance and presence garnered more enthusiasm from voters.

@JustSayRad Are we counting Meryl Streep as an actress, not an actor? Or because she didn’t lead Deer Hunter?

So Leonardo DiCaprio just joined Dustin Hoffman and Clark Gable as the only actors to lead three best picture winners: Titanic, The Departed, OBAA. #Oscars

Post-mortems on Timmy losing the #Oscars for his aggressive campaigning and antics miss the point. He (beautifully) plays an irritating character, which the Oscars never reward. They love to award performances when the character is either undeniably menacing, moving or loveable.

No the night wasn't as political as we would have hoped for given the moment we're in. But it was genuinely moving to come away from this thinking of the world we're passing on to our children, which is what the best movies in contention were about. theguardian.com/film/2025/dec/…
