Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell wants his constituents to believe that higher property taxes are due solely to rising property values. Does he expect us to forget last year’s 26% property tax increase? Or the 34% increase that the Metro Council—of which he was a member at the time—imposed in 2020? Not going to happen. Enough is enough. It’s time that Tennessee joined 46 other states in having a statewide cap on local property taxes. Cities like Nashville shouldn’t be able to keep spending taxpayer dollars on frivolous pet projects and corporate welfare deals, then coming back to taxpayers with their hands out—not asking for but demanding more money—when the pot is empty.
