@KAYJ_40 @DawnFantasia_NJ So are all the people from overseas or do you think maybe there could be some people who would be driving? See all that parking? That’s now VIP tents, corporate sponsor areas, media, etc…all of which were supposed to be placed off site…and now are taking up all that parking.

ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS??? No one forced the World Cup on us. NJ (and NY) scrambled to land it & FIFA was clear on security footprint & logistics since 2022. Every other host city committee planned & raised funds for this transportation issue. The answer is you don’t have one. $150 trains or $80 shuttles? AWFUL. Make NJ taxpayers pay? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Raise sales tax & hotel taxes across the entire state? NUTS. To add to the circus, Trenton Dems approved TWENTY MILLION DOLLARS TO ADVERTISE THE WORLD CUP, as if it was a mystery of sorts 🤦‍♀️ If only we had four years to plan for what we knew was coming this summer 🤔 Your poor planning now became everyone's problem. Y’all wanted the glory and the goods...but you didn't plan on how to pay for it.
Rep. Nellie Pou@RepNellie

The World Cup's $11 billion profit estimate for FIFA means they can spare train ticket subsidies for fans. Read our letter for details. @RepMenendez @RepDanGoldman

@shmokesmagoats @DawnFantasia_NJ The issue is that FIFA won't let anyone use the parking lots, which means that nearly everyone had to get to MetLife using a public transportation system. Our public transportation system was not built for this. So putting a workable system in place is expensive as hell.

Nobody warned me that working a 9-5 job basically means you cannot see the dentist, doctor, or handle any appointments, because you are at work when they are open, and when you get off work, they are closed.

@KAYJ_40 @ShoreNewsNJ NJ didn't get screwed. NJ is offering 150 dollar train tickets to World Cup games in the Meadowlands to cover costs. What Sherill is doing is great for the people of New Jersey. We shouldn't be left holding the bag so NYC can peacock on the global stage.

@chamberhands @ShoreNewsNJ I understand that as well as millions of others. The previous local government entered a crappy contract/agreement. They should have negotiated better. Now NJ is stuck with a mess. World Cup hosts traditionally doesn’t make a profit. NJ got screwed.

@KAYJ_40 @ShoreNewsNJ NYC is the "host city". NJ doesn't even get the marketing. The state literally gets nothing out of this.

@KAYJ_40 @AdamCrafton_ Simple math. Total FY2026 operating budget for NJT is $3.16B. Projected farebox revenue is $980 million. What am I missing?

FIFA have responded to this - and strongly. “We are quite surprised by the NJ Governor’s approach today on fan transportation. The original FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City Agreements signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches. Recognizing the financial strain this placed on the host cities, back in 2023 FIFA adjusted the Host Agreement requirements across all host cities as follows: All Match Ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to Stadiums on match days.   “FIFA worked for years with host cities on transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities for transportation.   “FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with related economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers were required to pay for fan transportation.”
Governor Mikie Sherrill@GovSherrillNJ

We inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing $0 for transportation to the World Cup. And while NJ TRANSIT is stuck with a $48 million bill to safely get fans to and from games, FIFA is making $11 billion. I’m not going to stick New Jersey commuters with that tab for years to come. FIFA should pay for the rides. But if they don’t – I’m not going to let New Jersey get taken for one.

@KAYJ_40 @AdamCrafton_ Are you saying 31% farebox recovery isn't true? In a privatization scenario, people would lose their minds when 85% or more of stations close and service is dramatically reduced. I don't have a problem with NJT being subsidized ... but let's be honest about what it means

@mnewy100redux @Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 I’m just saying the previous local government agreed to free transportation along with other things in the contract. It’s a crappy contract but it’s what was signed regardless who is in office now.

@KAYJ_40 @Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 They are having it there bc NYC. NY and FIFA will make $ hand over fist. They can subsidize the costs not the NJ people. Not will all things taken into account. This is probably a planned power move by NJ and I’m with it. Make FIFA/NY pay if the fans matter so much

I’m obsessed with the fight between New Jersey and FIFA.
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthleticFC: New Jersey Transit confirmed on Friday that World Cup match goers will be charged $150 for a return rail trip from New York's Penn Station to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey this summer. Tickets are ordinarily priced at $12.90. nyti.ms/4sHcLzR

@mnewy100redux @Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 I understand what you’re saying, it still goes back to why did they apply to host in the first place. History of the WC shows host cities will lose money. What did they think would happen? Now you’re two months out and all of sudden NJ is concerned.

@KAYJ_40 @Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 That’s a totally separate issue but there are places to stay. The issue rn is the train costs. Why should NJ and its taxpayers eat the costs while the people who fund the service can’t use it? That’s ridiculous lol. Ask FIFA or NY to help subsidize the costs but not NJ

@KAYJ_40 @Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 LMFAO cry to NY brother. They can stay in NJ and avoid that train. They want to be out of state? And have the public transport cater specially to them and not be useable for the public that FUNDS it? Pay the price, sucks to be broke. NY should pay and subsidize the costs then

@Bates_MotelMT @noturtlesoup17 Agreed. They are taking NJ workers public transport away and want it to run on normal costs on the taxpayers? All while charging a bunch for us to come in and use their infrastructure? It shouldn’t be on NJ taxpayers at all, Charge whatever, and use it to fund improvements.

@AdamCrafton_ The problem is... ~$100 RT from NYC is in the ballpark of "cost". The average taxpayer has no idea how expensive it is to run mass transit, and how little (comparatively) is covered by fares paid
