Giants close to acquiring Marcelo Mayer from Red Sox for reliever Erik Miller, sources tell me and Andrew Baggarly.

@BrewerSooner Maybe Zyhir Hope was their #1 target among prospects they discussed with various teams. That’s not a difficult leap to make.

So let’s get this straight: - Tigers called the Dodgers, wanted to get a deal done immediately - Rays weren’t even given a chance, Tigers didn’t care for their prospects - Made the price for Milwaukee much higher than for the Dodgers Something is fishy… way too fishy.
SleeperDodgers@SleeperDodgers

Detroit Tigers officials called the Dodgers on Saturday night to inform them they wanted to get the Skubal deal done, per @FabianArdaya & @katiejwoo Tigers reached out to the Dodgers 👀

@Soly_Reds I agree that not trading Singer would likely be a mistake. But trading him for nothing as you implied here would be an even bigger mistake. He’s been solid for a while. He has at least some positive value to this team if you keep him, so you’d have to get something in return

@theacarr21 blocking is not the most important skill for a C. he's terribly weak at framing, which matters more.

Every NYY fan is freaking out about needing a C, and Wells hasn't been good. But also, it's hard to see where they go. Jeffers/Goodman probably aren't moving? Stephenson is a poor defender and just-OK hitter. Not a lot of options here.

@BaseballValues Yeah that tracks…when I first saw the return I was shocked with how much they gave up.

The Reds selling at the deadline makes the most sense. The Reds buying makes less sense, but I could be on board with it. Doing neither would be a joke, which would be on par for their front office.

@ObscureExReds There are plenty of ways that this decision could backfire on the Reds (and I fully expect it to if they don’t trade Singer). That one in particular just isn’t one of them

Joke is gonna be on the Reds when they hold onto Singer and the QO dissolves in the new CBA.

@woodbat28 If they’re seriously considering keeping and giving a QO to BRADY SINGER, I’m sure they won’t have a problem giving one to Stephenson.

@KB_48 I think you might be underrating Brayden Taylor a little bit, and I don't think the Reds ownership group would green light 23 million dollars to a catcher that's as oft-injured as he is. Im skeptical at best on that being the stance the Reds take.

@woodbat28 Yes, because this return is worse than what you’d get from a player that declines a QO, in my opinion.

@KB_48 What? 😅 This is for a player with 5 years of control. Your counter would be that youd give Stephenson a 23.1 million dollar qualifying offer? Cmon..

@BarflyBill As good as he’s been recently, especially with his injury history, I don’t think he takes it. He probably goes for a longer term deal somewhere. Worst case, you solve the problem of a 1-year stopgap until Duno is ready.

@KB_48 The mere thought of paying Tyler Stephenson around $24M for one season is ridiculous

@DTMoore7 @bryce_spalding Some players would prefer a longer term, lower AAV deal. If he could get 3/$50M instead of 1/$22M (last year’s QO) for example, some pitchers would prefer that due to injury risk.

From The Athletic: “The Cincinnati #Reds appear likely to hold potential free-agent right-hander Brady Singer and potentially make him a qualifying offer at the end of the season, a person briefed on their thinking granted anonymity to discuss the plans tells The Athletic.”

@willie_lutz Can’t worry about that until after the deadline passes. Sometimes, waiting until the afternoon of the deadline is the best way to maximize value.

Feels like "do nothing" was the one thing the Reds could absolutely not do at the trade deadline, but with 6 hours left, here we are
