Brooms. Are. Back. (yes! yipee! yay!) ASP is in effect today. We'll be working to give the streets a much needed sweeping AND clearing out remaining snow piles. We've got EXTRA mechanical brooms out there today. And we are using 300+ plows & salt spreaders, alongside the brooms, to make sure they can reach those dirty curbs. Move your car during posted hours.

@naomirwolf Most cities in the north have proper equipment to PICK UP snow; why is it that NYC only PUSHES it to the sides and corners? then they want people to shovel the snow and put it where? On the sidewalks so that we can’t walk around? DSNY is doing what they can, but it is not enough

Got this from a sanitation worker in NYC. Important summary. Bottom line: it's not their fault and not the administration's. Read and consider: "Hello, I am a sanitation worker for DSNY. Any claims like that are false. We were picking up garbage starting 3 days after the storm. The department was on full force with mandatory OT so we were working 12hr days with all hands on deck. I am currently getting ready for my 17th day in a row. The snow brings some huge logistical challenges when picking up garbage; we were only able to work at half our normal pace - if that. Extra care has to be taken stepping out of the truck and traversing to the sidewalk due to ice; it’s very easy to get injured in these conditions. Dragging pails over mountains of snow/ice with cars parked bumper to bumper was a nightmare. Residents shoulder some of the blame here as pails should have been accessible for us to drag to the truck and sidewalks shoveled and salted. We greatly appreciate the residents that did that for us. The giant piles of bags from buildings are a challenge in the snow for the same reasons as well as the fact that extra care must be taken to make sure they did not bust open. The extreme cold makes the bags brittle and prone to that happening. Another issue contributing to the backlog is the fact that the trucks can only hold so much garbage before “loading out” and with many people staying home the volume of garbage was vastly increased. Once a truck loads out it is out of service until it is able to be dumped (trucks were being dumped on the 4hr OT portion of the shift). Besides dumping the trucks our OT functions included corner baskets and clearing crosswalks/pedestrian ramps, bus stops and fire hydrants from snow/ice. I am no fan of Mamdani but he does not shoulder any blame here, nor does the department. The extended freezing conditions and residents refusing to make things accessible for us are the main reasons things piled up. One more thing to keep in mind - recycling was not prioritized due to the fact that recycling does not smell, rot or attract rodents. That’s why you may still see recycling being left out in some places. Cardboard is not supposed to be put out loose, it should be bagged or bundled. Many residents also refuse to do that leading to it blowing around everywhere and becoming saturated with snow. It’s tiring when they want to point the finger at those working almost 3 weeks straight of 12hr days but can’t even do their part. Please feel free to follow up with any questions you may have and please keep me anonymous! Thank you."

@_Steve_Bennett @placardabuse Yes, you can get there using public transit, but as I said, people can’t simply walk into base. Even if candidates show up at the gate, they won’t be allowed inside without their recruiters. The gov wont pay them to spend 3 hours of their day communing instead of recruiting. 🤷‍♂️

This might be peak @placardabuse: military recruiting car (why do they need cars?) parked in No Standing zone for a week+ without moving, preventing Chambers from being fully plowed, two blocks from City Hall.

After days and days of working on BOTH snow operations and collection, we ARE catching up on trash and compost pickup. And we ARE collecting paper and metal/glass/plastic recycling, too, FAR FASTER than in previous storms. It’s a 24/7 operation – working on both collection and snow removal - running hundreds of collection trucks on every shift, 12 hours at a time, until we are fully caught up. Thousands of people are working to get this done as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your ongoing patience as we work to do it all.

Did you know? We bring snow to the melters – NOT the melters to the snow. Piled snow is trucked to the snow melters, which are in all five boroughs. Once on site, front-end loaders pick up the snow and dump it in the melter. The snow melts to water, and is drained into specific sewers that can handle ALL. THIS. SNOW! The snow melters can melt between 60-120 tons of snow per hour. And with so much snow out there, they will be running for a while!

Call it a hot tub. Call it a jacuzzi. Call it OVER for the tons of snow piling up on our streets! Our snow melters are out and operational in all five boroughs. We bring snow from streets to central locations where melters turn the snow to water, giving us all a little more space.

@NY1 @NYCMayor pushing the snow to the corners is not a solution. People are being forced to share the streets with cars because there are mountains of snow in every corner making it impossible to cross the street; Low temps not helping either!!

Mayor Zohran Mamdani says city agencies are "completely in shape and ready" to handle the winter storm expected this weekend, despite New York City having had fewer snowstorms in recent years. He also said that Monday will either be a remote learning day or an in-person school day for public school students. He told @JamieStelter that the final determination will be made by Sunday at noon.
