Hot take but I actually think more people would warm up to the ideals of Objectivism if Rand fans recommended The Fountainhead instead of Atlas Shrugged

Got sucked out by a rip in bocas del toro with my 6 and 8yr old kids number of years ago. Felt the sandbar that we were standing on get ripped out from under us. One kid on each shoulder, treading water with my feet. As we were sucked outside (which as a surfer, I knew was a better spot to be) we had to dive under the 4-5ft breaking waves… I held their wrists tighter than anything and I kicked under the breaking waves. Once out I could exit the rip perpendicular to sand and slowly make our way in. Single guard made it halfway out and I put both kids on his torp as I swam in. That year was the first that hotels paid a guard as multiple people had drowned in prior years. Had I not spent decades in the water - kids and likely me woulda drowned.

My son (24) and his friend were caught in a rip current last year. They were quickly separated by the water. My son, who was an experienced swimmer, managed to swim sideways out of the current and back to shore. His friend was only saved by the good fortune of a Chad on a surfboard.

It might not look dangerous but that's the problem. You get caught in there, a kid especially, the kid gasses out, or you do, and it's over.

The sanctimony of the acceptance speeches and the condescending way they implied the lowly audience both shared their values and was temporarily allowed in on their inside jokes was especially noxious. Its a wonder my flat screen survived the full impact of the Loro Piana sneaker which I used as a projectile.

One of my boys has one of the craziest bipolar habits with money. He’ll go from spending $10k in one night on a night out in Medellin or Ibiza. Drinks. Hookers. Table service. He’s done this several times… To then doing a complete 180 and go full accountant mode, refusing to spend any money on ANYTHING. Of course, he gets bored after few months of ultra saving mode, thinks he’ll be more responsible, until he gets a couple of Jack and Cokes in him and he’s spending money like he’s a millionaire (he’s not). And the cycle repeats ♻️ After a bender in Bali last week, he’s now decided to MOVE HOME with his parents to save money until he RETIRES lol… Can anyone help?? Or is he just cooked?

@moxie @naval Same. When I learned he died at the age of 47 after years of alcohol abuse - I realized it reflected a regrettable period of life that I’m glad to have grown out of.

When I was in highschool, a friend gave me a copy of "On The Road." It was a big part of what inspired me to wander into a freight train yard and climb on a 48 for the first time, or to stand by an on-ramp and stick my thumb out for a string of rides across the country a few years later. I remember reading it and wanting my life to feel as full, to have friendships as meaningful, to know so much more about what was "out there." On those trips I was always wide-eyed, writing poetry, talking to everybody, leaning forward into the road ahead. I'm in a re-reading phase, and I tried re-reading "On The Road" for the first time since I was a teenager. I actually couldn't finish it. Far from being inspiring, all I could think was that I'm glad that isn't my life. It seemed almost the inverse of everything that inspired me as a teenager: shallow relationships, absent of meaning, a small and almost unadventurous existence. This has been the same for almost everything I've re-read. It has made me realize that if I re-read something and am not disappointed, it probably means I've been doing something wrong.

Thanks to a decision to quit drinking I have no desire for a hectic lifestyle —I'm grateful to be retired, sober and financially free, allowing me to live simply and on my terms If I’m at the gym at 2 pm on a Tuesday that’s my choice - I control my time Playing golf on a sunny morning is always an option Sit at a coffee shop and relax for as long as I want on a rainy afternoon, clear-headed Travel when we get restless and want to go Devote our time and resources to our family and children, helping to enhance their lives That’s my idea of a rich life—sober, unhurried, and free. If you’re stuck like I was 1,575 days ago — know that it’s never too late to make a change if you want it

Drinking because because you’re anxious? Or anxious because you’re drinking? I thought drinking was helping me with my anxiety. That’s the lie I told myself. I was anxious every day because I was drinking. Now I’m sober, anxiety isn’t an issue.

In my first 2 years sober no one has asked me why I don’t drink. Until I started this job. Everyone did. Some even made fun of me. But guess what, in this sober thing you get to a point that when people laugh at what you’re more proud of, you don’t give a fuck. 🤘🏼
