The lady at the charity shop today told me that she wishes people would clear out their children's old toys in the lead up to Christmas rather than after because she always sees a number of parents in the days before Christmas looking for toys for their little ones who might be strapped for cash. She said there's very rarely anything in just before, but that they get inundated with toys in the days after. And it really made me think about it in a way I never would have before. If you know your child is going to get lots of presents from Father Christmas this year, by clearing out your cupboards a few days early, you could make another child's Christmas a lot more special too. Saw this & thought I'd repost.

Just so everyone is clear what happened here; Waitrose, a company that makes many millions in profits, was happy to let this young man work in their stores for several years without being paid. The moment that he asks to be paid for his time, they refuse to let him come back. This wasn't a "placement", or about helping him to get some "work experience", this was a large company taking advantage of a young man to use him as free labour, and the moment he wasn't free anymore, they dumped him. This isn't inclusivity, this is blatant exploitation.

This is just pure exploitation of an autistic person @waitrose. He has effectively been working a part time job for you for over 4 years now, but he has not been paid a penny for it and it doesn't look like he ever will be paid in future . @BBCNews feel like investigating this?

I believe that @waitrose need to offer this young man a paid job. This experience shows how in some circumstances "volunteering" and work placement schemes can exploit chronically ill, disabled and neurodivergent people. This needs to stop.

This is the reality of disabled people working. This young man was an invaluable part of the team — praised, included, and admired — until his family asked he be paid just a little for years of hard work. Shame on you, @waitrose. This treatment as worth less gets internalised.
