The Westminster confession of faith is a great work of theology. Everyone should read it including Eastern Orthodox and Catholics

@Svigel Then it poses the question of what it means if the state appears to be courting the church.

Theology 101: Throughout history, marriages between Church and State ultimately led to manipulation, exploitation, and abuse. It’s a fundamentally toxic relationship that ends in tears if we’re lucky or bloodshed if we’re not. It’s best not even to start holding hands.

The Reformed: We aren't just "fruit checkers"! We have real assurance! Meanwhile, the Canons of Dork: Such assurance comes [...] by noticing within themselves [...] the unmistakable fruits of election pointed out in God’s Word—such as a true faith in Christ, a childlike fear of God, a godly sorrow for their sins, a hunger and thirst for righteousness, and so on.

Protestantism's deepest assumption is that Christianity went wrong almost immediately and stayed wrong for 1,500 years. That's not a small claim. It's the entire premise of the movement.

@KeithAdNauseam @5Solas2 Reformed requires continuously move the goalposts to redefine its own system when contradictions are pointed out but that then contradicts another part. It's a web of Pilpul to justify exalting their own authority. So they have claims but its not coherent or resulting practice.

Exactly, Roman Catholics don't distinguish between scripture being the only INFALLIBLE authority vs. the ONLY authority or source of information.
Aidan Mattis@MattisRedacted

@exanxc Once again, Protestants don’t believe that the Bible is the only source of information, just that it’s the only *infallible* one.

@Virgurilla @5Solas2 Adam was righteous before he chose to sin. After he did, we love evil and practice it. If you ask why God would allow and purpose that, it'd be so that faith through Christ may abound.

@KeithAdNauseam @5Solas2 The same god invented what that evil was, not really problem solving if you created the problem on purpose.

@personXpersonY @5Solas2 Both are answerable through how desires are understood. Free will to us is agency; upon regeneration your desire becomes righteous and now God centered. You do what you want. For the flesh, it is sin; for the righteous, it can be righteousness (though the flesh is present still).

@KeithAdNauseam @5Solas2 Reformed also combines monergism that says all free will is demolished. They try to get around it but when you come down to it it casts God as Dictator & Creation as a pointless, sadistic exercise. Result is faith alone without choice & aren't required obedience or anything.

@Virgurilla @5Solas2 Don't tempt me to gush more; God in the flesh dead for man's evil? How could one scoff at that love shown?

@KeithAdNauseam @5Solas2 Yeah those are certainly two things that two different books say, and they are equally as truthful. Thanks for this insightful conversation, I love talking about Gandalf he's cool.

@personXpersonY @5Solas2 I'd argue that the Reformed doctrine of regeneration goes against that greatly; as Paul says: How can we who have died to sin live in it any more?. The regenerate (we'd say) have been given new life and from that new desires that results generally in sanctification.

@KeithAdNauseam @5Solas2 Yes. It's Antinomianism. Not new, just revived with Protestant faith alone Half Gospel. It teaches moral law no longer binds believers, so obedience isn't necessary after coming to faith. Essentially it doesn't matter if you keep sinning. "Once saved always saved" false doctrine.
