I’ve been retired for eight years from the Chicago Police. Well, now I think I am in the safe lane to speak my mind about the City of Chicago and the Police Department. Born and raised on the South Side. Went to St. Ignatius with many other fellow students that became Chicago Police Officers, including wonderful talented people, like my classmate Commander Paul Bauer who used to joke with me as I saw him rise through the ranks about why I was class president at St. Ignatius but never made a high-ranking position in the police department. I would tell him that he was the better cop, and he indeed was. As you know Paul lost his life for this City. I worked for many years on this job. I have seen things that I could literally write a book on and it would never get published for the gratuitous depravity, violence and abject hatred towards humanity. I remember all the people in this city, approaching us during our tours and telling us, “Thank you Officer.” I am sure those feelings were heartfelt. But after all the negativity that has been generated towards Law Enforcement lately, I also think sometimes of Colonel Jessup in “A Few Good Men” when he says, You weep and you curse… You have that luxury…You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall -- you need me on that wall.” This is exactly how I think when I think of all those hard-working law enforcement officers all over this world do their job and then are judged immediately for their actions when the proverbial “SHIT” goes down. Talk about it at parties and on news shows about what that officer was supposed to do. Talk about what you would do if you were there. But you see, you have that “luxury” to talk about it. When I was a first year teacher, I had two sections of AP Language and a section of AP Literature. As such, I operated under the (unconscious) assumption that everyone in my class could read and write. This was a mistake. I didn’t yet know how thoroughly schools were willing to lie about the capabilities of the students they’ve failed to educate.
