The U.S. Embassy in Eritrea proudly marked Freedom 250 on May 7 with friends and colleagues. Chargé d’Affaires Christine Meyer highlighted the enduring values of freedom, democracy, partnership, and mutual respect that continue to strengthen ties between the American and Eritrean people. The celebration, blessed with beautiful rains, was graced by Guest of Honor Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, along with government officials, diplomats, partners, alumni, and friends. #Eritrea #USA

WW1 did not just devastate Europe. It transformed Eritrea. Food shortages. British naval blockades. Locust invasions. Economic collapse. Factories expanding for war profits while entire communities starved. By 1922, 80% of Italians in Eritrea had joined the Fascist Party. This episode explores how war, inflation, humiliation, and colonial crisis created the conditions for fascism to rise in Eritrea long before the Second World War. 🎧YouTube: t.ly/PLBds 🎧Spotify: t.ly/bW9Bf 🎧Apple: t.ly/ytncL New episode of Eritrawi Podcast. #Eritrea #WW1 #WorldWar1 #ItalianColonialism #Fascism #Asmara #Massawa #AfricanHistory #HornOfAfrica #ColonialHistory #HistoryPodcast #EritrawiPodcast #ItalianEritrea #RedSeaHistory #EastAfrica

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT, SELF-RELIANCE, AND THE PROMISE OF A KNOWLEDGE-DRIVEN FUTURE On May 24, 2026, Eritrea marks 35 years of independence—a milestone that invites reflection not only on the sacrifices of the past, but on the foundations being laid for the future. At the center of Eritrea’s development story is a defining principle: self-reliance anchored in human development, particularly through education, national capacity-building, and citizen-driven innovation—both inside the country and across the diaspora. Some countries are known more by what is said about them than by what is experienced within them. Eritrea reminded me of the distance between those two things. This was my first visit. We came to deepen dialogue, move projects forward, and understand where partnership can go further. The work itself was clear: Energy, transport, financial sector modernization, skills development. But the experience unfolded differently. It felt personal. H.E. Mr. Hagos Gebrehiwet, the President’s Senior Advisor, made things possible in ways that are not always visible, but are always felt — clearances, access, responsiveness. The kind of support that builds real momentum. Hon. Dr. Giorgis Teklemikael, Minister of Finance and National Development, gave us his time beyond protocol. He walked with us through discussions, joined site visits, hosted dinner, and created space for honest, constructive conversation. We also engaged deeply with: • Hon. Dr. Halima Mohammed, Minister of Education • Hon. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture • Hon. Alem Kibreab, Acting Minister of Mines and Energy • Mr. Aynom Berhane, Director General, National Statistics Office Each showed ownership and commitment to progress. Special appreciation to Ms. Nahla Valji, UN Resident Coordinator, for bringing together partners from UNDP, UNICEF, IFAD and others. Eritrea is often seen from a distance, sometimes misunderstood. On the ground, what you find is effort — deliberate, steady, and real. A country working in its own way and at its own pace to build something durable. It is a privilege for the @AfDB_Group to partner with Eritrea on this journey. A partnership built on trust, and one we don’t take lightly. We left with concrete next steps — including greenfield renewable solar power plants in Tesseney, Kerkebet and Berantu, plus financial sector modernization. But more than projects, we take a deeper understanding of the country and quiet reassurance that respectful, patient partnership finds its way forward. Via Alex M. Written in 1927 in Tigrinya, Hade Zanta, "The Conscript", told the story of an Eritrean soldier forced to fight for empire decades before African literature was “recognized.” This isn’t just a novel. It exposes how colonialism turns the oppressed into instruments of its own power. Forgotten by the world. But never absent. #Eritrea #AfricanLiterature #TheConscript #HadeZanta #DecolonizeKnowledge #AfricanHistory #Colonialism #HistoryThread #EritrawiPodcast 🎧YouTube: t.ly/xJniO 🎧 Spotify: t.ly/omlJW 🎧Apple: t.ly/cqQM1
