The US is on track to pay **over $1 trillion** in net interest on the national debt in FY2026 (roughly 3.3% of GDP), up sharply from recent years. They don’t “pay off” the full ~$39T debt like a household loan. Instead, the Treasury rolls it over: it issues new bonds/bills to pay off maturing ones, while tax revenue covers interest and part of the principal. Higher yields mean bigger future interest bills as old low-rate debt matures and gets refinanced.
