There are ~9000 times as many trees in Canada as people. Most of the forest is highly inaccessible, far from any towns or roads. Any sort of large-scale active forest managment is a fantasy in Canada, and firefighting is mostly limited to the small portion near inhabited areas.

The boreal forest has to burn in order to be reborn. It burns every four to eight decades. It's a natural process. Our forests are older in Canada because we have been putting out fires for decades now. Older forests burn hot. Can we do something? Yes, experts have told me, prescribed burns and clearing out deadfall can work. Not easy.

@pittjess11 Even if the entire U.S. military had full wildland‑firefighting gear, they still could not simply “put out” a major Canadian wildfire. They could dramatically increase suppression capacity, but they cannot guarantee extinguishing a large, multi‑front, deep‑burning wildfire.

To anyone who gets mad and asks “What is Canada supposed to do about these fires?” the correct is “Manage your forests instead of cutting funding in the name of climate change.”

@JasminLaine @Harry__Faulkner This doesn’t make any sense, how can you say we’re bad at fire management? That only applies to around cities sure like Jasper and ft mac but common, be realistic. The boreal is designed to burn. Several tree species depend on it and it’s huge.

Many things can be true at the same time. 1) Canada sucks at fire prevention and forest management. They’ve acknowledged this many times. It’s probable beyond reasonable doubt. 2) Americans have been irritated by it year over year and Canada hasn’t done as much as they could have to prioritize prevention. So, Trumps comments aren’t completely incorrect… though it’s disappointing it got to this point. 3) the government clearly doesn’t listen to domestic pressure—but they do foreign. So perhaps this will help them prioritize that. 4) trumps latest tariff warning seems kind of silly on this topic given what it is. 5) Canadians and Americans are complaining about the same thing… but instead of listen to Canadians for the concern to be taken seriously, we only focus on what the Americans say. TLDR: I’d argue it is pretty elbows up to only care enough about something that’s destroying your land, hurting your people, and obliterating your climate goals because Trump gets involved. Maybe if we focused on what our own people, experts and industries were saying in years prior, Canadians may—through evolution—have no need for elbows at all.
