For those who don’t understand how ISPs like Savanna work, here’s a simple explainer. Imagine you rent an apartment in a building with 100 rooms. The landlord tells you: “Water is available 24/7, for only KSh 2,000.” You move in. At first, everything is perfect. Strong pressure. Water anytime. Why? Because you’re one of the first tenants. Then, more people move in. Suddenly: - Water pressure drops - Sometimes water is there… but very slow - Sometimes it’s unavailable during peak hours - You even start buying water elsewhere Now you’re confused. “Didn’t they say 24/7 water?” They didn’t lie. But what they didn’t tell you is this: There’s ONE tank… serving MANY people. So yes, water exists. But pressure is shared. That’s exactly how cheap internet works. You’re not paying for dedicated speed. You’re sharing it. And the more people who join... the smaller your “share” becomes. By the way, my views are independent. Kenya has multiple ISPs that run most of the internet infrastructure, such as Safaricom, Zuku, Liquid, and others. I’m not paid by anyone to say this. I support cheaper internet 100%. But explaining basic network economics doesn’t mean I’m defending anyone. I could be right or wrong, time will tell. Let’s just be honest about how these systems work.

Kenyans are about to learn a VERY expensive lesson about “cheap internet.” Savanna ISP is offering: 100 Mbps - KSh 2,000 1 Gbps - KSh 10,000 And everyone is excited. But let’s slow down and think. Right now in Kenya, 100 Mbps of stable fibre is around KSh 4,500 - 10,000. So when someone comes at 2,000, you shouldn’t celebrate first... You should ask questions. Because the internet is not printed out of thin air . Also, the internet business is math. They don’t own submarine cables or most of the backbone. So they’re buying bandwidth. Wholesale bandwidth is roughly $1-$5 per Mbps. Do the math: 1 Gbps = 1000 Mbps Even at $1, that's ~$1000 (~KSh 130,000) Now explain how that becomes KSh 10,000 to you. Exactly. So what’s really being sold here? Oversubscription. You’re being sold “speed” that assumes you won’t actually use it when others are. And they know it. And this is how it usually plays out: Months 1 and 2: Everything is likely to be fast. People will be tweeting “game changer 🔥”. You will see hashtags here to get more people to join Month 2 going forward: More users join. Evenings will start dragging. Your YouTube will start buffering a lot. Month 3 going forward: Now the reality hits: - Peak hours, e.g., in the evening, feel slow - Speeds jump up and down - Some sites are fast, others struggle - Random downtimes start appearing Not because they’re evil. Because math always wins. This model works beautifully… until too many people sign up. The model is advertised as a success, nice, etc., to bring in more people to join, and eventually, everything hits the end. Then performance becomes the hidden cost. And suddenly that “cheap internet” doesn’t feel cheap anymore. Suddenly, you are stressed, you have to buy more data, and spend even more. If they pull it off, I’ll admit I was wrong. But if you’ve seen this industry before, you already know where this is heading. Go ahead and subscribe, but also retain a backup. Just don’t act surprised later. Bookmark this.

Hi The Kenyan Vigilante. Hope you’re well I know there are a lot of bigger things going on in our country right now but I wanted to know if you can help shed some light to your followers on the current “living” situation of wildlife at Stedmak Gardens in Karen A video was shared of a lion which shares an enclosure (less than 100 m^2) with 5 other lions and it looked to be injured and very malnourished. The “caretakers” seem least bothered and when approached and asked regarding the lions current state, they brushed it off and refused to answer.

It is an interesting time to be a Kenyan/Kalenjin today in many aspects and spheres becase the sitting president is one. This affected Kikuyus/Mt. Kenya before. It is worse for a Kalenjin. Any appointment of a Kalenjin is considered a profit of ethnicity and not meritocracy. I have spent quite some energy and resources challenging state excesses and championing the rule of law but I am pigeonholed as a Kalenjin.Nothing more. Every Kalenjin is considered incompetent, corrupt,a looter or liar. Most people come from a village, county,an ethnic conclave, perhaps a profession. No crime. No apologies. The biggest problem in Kenya today is not the ethnic configuration we carry but negative ethnicity across the country that profiles ethnic groups as opposed to individuals. We got to go for individual criminals in government, police, counties and villages as opposed to names, nomenclature or regional antecedents. The elephant in the room is that the country is approaching the precipice but the cure is out of the horizon. Our problems are corruption, looting, impunity, negative ethnicity, state extravagance and hubris and not ethnic extractions.Let us face it. Let us stop this nonsense of profiling ethnic groups and go for responsible individuals as we build a united nation hinged on national values and principles of governance under Article 10 COK 2010.

Evaporation of titles in Kenya Ownership of land in Kenya remains slippery. Authorities will issue rates and rent clearance certificates against the land. Lands offices will issue you with official search, White or green card today. Then with the speed of lightning a rich wo/man from nowhere approaches the same lands to destroy not only your register but also parcel file.Fresh title is issued to the rich wo/man. A new correspondence file is erected. Within a twinkling of an eye your title will lose its roots. Then lands officers will testify against your title deed in court and in favour of the bourgeois. They will deny knowledge of your title deed, official search and white/greencard that they issued. Even rates and rent clearance certificates will be disowned. They will pontificate that there is nothing in the correspondence file closer to your name. The Court will agree with the lands offices that your title deed is not well rooted. Just like that, your mad investments will evaporate.Nobody punishes criminals at the land registry. Their accomplices get away with your property. Wayforward:let us clean our politics so that we entrench better governance anchored on integrity, justice, fairness, respect for the right to property and economic freedom as opposed to governance by cartels, thieves, thugs and criminals.

I held two conversations this week with President Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC, including earlier today. What has been said about these conversations in the media by South African officials and President Ramaphosa himself contains a lot of distortion, deliberate attacks, and even lies. If words can change so much from a conversation to a public statement, it says a lot about how these very important issues are being managed. A few important clarifications for the record: 1. The Rwanda Defence Force is an army, not a militia. 2. SAMIDRC is not a peacekeeping force, and it has no place in this situation. It was authorized by SADC as a belligerent force engaging in offensive combat operations to help the DRC Government fight against its own people, working alongside genocidal armed groups like FDLR which target Rwanda, while also threatening to take the war to Rwanda itself. 3. SAMIDRC displaced a true peacekeeping force, the East African Community Regional Force, and this contributed to the failure of the negotiation processes. 4. President Ramaphosa has never given a "warning" of any kind, unless it was delivered in his local language which I do not understand. He did ask for support to ensure the South African force has adequate electricity, food and water, which we shall help communicate. 5. President Ramaphosa confirmed to me that M23 did not kill the soldiers from South Africa, FARDC did. 6. If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator. And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.
Cyril Ramaphosa 🇿🇦@CyrilRamaphosa

Fellow South Africans, Following the recent intensification of fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Africa has lost 13 brave soldiers who were dedicated to their mission and committed to peace. The fighting is the result of an escalation by the rebel group M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia engaging the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and attacking peacekeepers from the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC). On behalf of the government and the people of our country, I express our sincerest condolences to their families, their loved ones and colleagues. We bow our heads in honor of their heroic and gallant fight for peace. We honour and mourn them. All necessary support is being provided to the families of the deceased and the families of the injured. The process to repatriate the remains of the deceased is underway. The attacks on peacekeepers resulted in the deaths of SAMIDRC members from other troop contributing countries, namely, Malawi and Tanzania, as well members of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) brigade. We honour all the lives that were lost and pass our condolences to their families, governments and citizens. The situation in Goma and Sake, where our troops and their counterparts are stationed, remains very tense, volatile and unpredictable. The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms Angie Motshekga and the Chief of the SANDF Gen Rudzani Maphwanya and SAMIDRC Force Commander Maj Gen Monwabisi Dyakopu are working to ensure that the SAMIDRC forces remain well equipped and sufficiently supported during this critical mission. We are concerned about the speculation about the state of our troops and the battle conditions. All South Africans must rally behind our brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to bringing peace in our continent. South Africa’s military presence in the eastern DRC is not a declaration of war against any country or state. The members of the South African National Defence Force that are in the DRC are part of both SADC and United Nations efforts to bring peace and protect thousands of lives that are constantly threatened by the conflict in the DRC. The presence of the SAMIDRC forces demonstrates a commitment of SADC member states to supporting the DRC in its efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability and ultimately, create an enabling environment for sustainable development and prosperity. We welcome the position that was recently adopted by the United Nations Security Council during its special sitting on the situation in the DRC, which calls for an immediate end to hostilities, the reversal of territorial expansion by the M23, the exit of external forces from the DRC and the resumption of peace talks under the Nairobi Process. The territorial integrity of the DRC must be respected in accordance with the United Nations Charter on the respect of sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of other states. We call on all parties to this conflict to fully embrace the current diplomatic efforts that are aimed at finding a peaceful resolution, including honoring the Luanda Process agreements. We must silence the guns on our continent for the attainment of inclusive development and prosperity. I thank you.
