Have you heard the term “capital flight” before? You will. New Zealand is openly advertising, lower inflation, no capital gains tax and a more investment-friendly environment. Meanwhile Australia is, increasing taxation, issuing more debt, watching bond yields rise and making productive capital less attractive. Capital is mobile and so are Investors. At some point Canberra must decide: do we want to attract investment and productivity or continue to punish it? Because other countries are already inviting that capital to leave our shores.

If you want to know if someone is truly supportive of the CGT changes or just doesn’t want someone else to get the benefit or don’t understand it you can work it out by asking them the following If you earn between 35k and 140k invested $100,000 in the NDQ ETF in 2024, it’d be worth approx $150k today. Tax would be 8k and you’d keep $42k Same return from 2027 onwards would be $36,533 and you’d be taxed $13.5k I’ve asked 5 people who are supportive of the CGT changes if they think this is fair and they all say no. But then they say it doesn’t apply to them as they aren’t investing in shares because they’re paying off their mortgage and it’s the rich that are going to be taxed. And that’s the whole point - the people who will be most affected aren’t “the rich”, its the people who are trying to save for a house deposit or trying to generate some long term capital growth who can least afford to be taxed more. A tax is either far or it’s not - fairness isn’t doesn’t change just because it doesn’t apply to you
