They used logic. It’s called an exit wound. Generally, a lightning strike with an exit wound is more lethal than one without. When lightning creates an exit wound, it means it is released long enough at a high voltage to break through the skin destroying everything in its path throughout the body, and disrupts any form of electrical current (including the ones that keeps the heart going) and creates its own exit wound cuz electricity needs to go somewhere. Same principle with defibrillator machines. You have two paddles, each acting as the entry and exit point of electricity but not high enough of a voltage to break the skin. The difference with what happened to uncle Iroh where there is NO exit point is what we call in physics as the “flashover effect” where high voltage electricity strikes you but only for such a short moment that it glazes over the combined electric current released by your skin and the air pocket that surrounds it and only burns the surrounding materials outside of your body (clothes, accessories) which leaves you a visible lightning shaped burn mark. Sufficed to say, if you understood physics, the strike aimed at uncle Iroh was not meant to kill but simply harm. The strike towards Aang was meant to be lethal.
