The inclusion of the Manusmriti in NCERT textbooks raises profound constitutional concerns and question of sociological impact. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar fundamentally rejected Manusmriti, viewing it as a deeply oppressive framework that gave religious sanction to caste-based discrimination, untouchability, and the subjugation of women. Babasaheb had argued in Annihilation of Caste, the Manusmriti is not a mere collection of rules; it is a psychological and social structure designed to legitimise hierarchy, untouchability and perpetuate graded inequality. Diametrically opposed to the Manusmriti, the Constitution of India, drafted by Babasaheb, represents a decisive and radical departure from the discriminatory and exclusionary social philosophy of Manusmriti. Grounded in constitutional morality, the Constitution is a deliberate commitment to liberty, equality, fraternity, and individual dignity. It fundamentally replaced birth-based privilege with citizenship rights, hierarchy with equality before the law, and inherited discrimination with a robust framework for social justice. In India, the Manusmriti's legacy of graded inequality and untouchability remains deeply embedded in customary practices that the nation still struggles to dismantle. In a country where the overwhelming majority belongs to historically marginalised communities and half the population comprises women, education must serve as an instrument of emancipation, scientific temper, and egalitarian values. Introducing this text into school curricula will normalise a philosophy inherently tied to caste and gender oppression, directly undermining the vision of Babasaheb and supporting the regressive and casteist vision of Savarkar and Golwalkar. India’s classrooms must cultivate critical inquiry and social justice, not revive exclusionary doctrine of Manu, which is endorsed by RSS. The moral compass of our education system must remain the Constitution, and not the regressive, anti-India text Manusmriti.

२०२४ मध्ये भारतातील बीड जिल्ह्यात ८४३ महिलांनी ऊसतोडीसाठी जाण्याच्या अगोदर गर्भाशय काढण्याची शस्त्रक्रिया करून घेतली. त्यापैकी ४७७ महिला या ३० ते ३५ वयोगटातील होत्या. ही माहिती महाराष्ट्र सरकारच्या स्वतःच्या आरोग्य सर्वेक्षणातून समोर आली असून तो अहवाल जून २०२५ मध्ये प्रकाशित झाला. या शस्त्रक्रियांचा संबंध थेट पैशांशी आहे. बीडमध्ये एक पुरुष आणि त्याची पत्नी मिळून “कोयता” म्हणून कामासाठी नोंदणी करतात — हे नाव ते वापरत असलेल्या अवजारावरून पडले आहे. “मुकादम” नावाचा मध्यस्थ त्यांना सहा महिन्यांच्या ऊसतोड हंगामासाठी ५० ते ६० हजार रुपयांची आगाऊ रक्कम देतो. त्या बदल्यात त्या दाम्पत्याला दररोज तब्बल दोन टन ऊस तोडून ट्रकमध्ये भरावा लागतो. हे काम दिवसाला १२ ते १४ तास चालते आणि आठवड्यात एकही सुट्टी नसते. मुकादम आगाऊ रकमेपैकी १५ ते २५ टक्के हिस्सा घेतो, शिवाय जोडप्याच्या कमाईतील आणखी रक्कम स्वतःकडे ठेवतो. एखादा दिवस काम चुकल्यास २५० ते ५०० रुपयांचा दंड आकारला जातो. एखाद्या महिलेला मासिक पाळीदरम्यान त्रासामुळे एक दिवस सुट्टी घ्यावी लागली, तर तिच्या जवळपास आठवडाभराच्या हातात येणाऱ्या उत्पन्नावर परिणाम होतो.त्यामुळे मासिक पाळीची झंझट संपवण्यासाठी थेट गर्भाशय पिशवीच काढून टाकली जाते. ऊस खरेदी करणाऱ्या साखर कारखान्यांची या सगळ्या प्रक्रियेशी कायदेशीरदृष्ट्या थेट जोड नसते. कारखाना फक्त साखर विकतो. महाराष्ट्रात २१० साखर कारखाने आहेत आणि २०२५-२६ हंगामात जवळपास १ कोटी टन साखर उत्पादन होण्याचा अंदाज आहे. ही साखर खरेदी करणाऱ्यांमध्ये Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Mondelez (ज्यांच्या मालकीचा Cadbury ब्रँड आहे) आणि Unilever यांचा समावेश आहे. २०२४ मध्ये The New York Times आणि The Fuller Project यांच्या संयुक्त तपासात हा पुरवठा साखळीचा मागोवा घेतला गेला. या तपासात दोन मोठ्या साखर कंपन्यांचा उल्लेख झाला - Dalmia Bharat Sugar आणि NSL Sugars. या कंपन्या अशा साखर कारखान्यांना ऊस पुरवत होत्या ज्यांच्याकडे उद्योगातील प्रमुख नैतिक प्रमाणपत्र “Bonsucro” होते. मात्र त्या संस्थेच्या तपासणीत हे काहीच उघड झाले नाही. जे काही ऑडिटमध्ये सापडले नाही, ते न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्सच्या तपासाने काही महिन्यांत उघड केले. २०१९ मध्ये सरकारी चौकशीत बीडमधील ८२,३०९ महिला ऊसतोड मजुरांचे सर्वेक्षण करण्यात आले. त्यापैकी १३,८६१ महिलांचे — म्हणजे जवळपास १७ टक्के — गर्भाशय काढण्यात आले होते.२०२४ मध्ये IIED या आंतरराष्ट्रीय संशोधन संस्थेने बीडमधील ४२३ कुटुंबांचा अधिक सखोल अभ्यास केला. ज्या कुटुंबांतील महिला ऊसतोडीसाठी स्थलांतरित झाल्या होत्या, त्यापैकी ५५.७३ टक्के महिलांची गर्भाशय काढण्याची शस्त्रक्रिया झाली होती. ज्या महिला गावातच राहिल्या, त्यांच्यात हा आकडा १७.०६ टक्के होता. तुलना म्हणून पाहिल्यास, भारतभर १५ ते ४९ वयोगटातील महिलांमध्ये गर्भाशय काढण्याचे राष्ट्रीय प्रमाण फक्त ३.२ टक्के आहे. २०२४ मधील या बातम्यांनंतर काही हालचाली झाल्या. Mondelez ने शांतपणे Dalmia Bharat Sugar सोबतचे संबंध तोडले. Coca-Cola ने ४ साखर कारखान्यांमध्ये कामगार प्रशिक्षण कार्यक्रम सुरू केला.
