He still fits as the No. 2. His strong post-Olympic run, relationship with Vladar, popularity in the room and fact that he's had so much streakiness and injury (limiting other suitors as a FA) probably extends his Philly run a year.

problem is he came in out of shape and failed to earn his coachs trust, combined w/ language barrier & a team performing above expectation led to a Coach prioritizing winning w/ players he could trust more

The biggest issue I have with the Michkov scratchings is that now we have to go through a whole offseason of “he’s getting traded” “Tocchet hates him” “the organization is ruining him”, it would have just been so much more simple to keep him in the lineup maybe try and put him..

2026-27 was the initial planned start for Matvei Michkov in Philly.
Instead of running the KHL for the past two years, he learned the NHL, put up 114 points while playing under Torts/Toc, and experienced playoff hockey.
Next year it begins…

A Russian kid fell to us in the draft, put up 60+ pts as a rookie at 20 yrs old. Came in his sophomore year “out of shape” & extremely misused in both 5v5 & the power play, yet he still reached 20G & 50+ pts. It’s the coach’s job to fit this player in his team, period.

My Michkov opinions:
-He has no interest in leaving Flyers
-He wants to be huge part of this team’s success
-He is learning what it means to be part of a team
-He will spend summer ensuring he’s ready for next season - focus on conditioning and learning English
