@tobyhardtospell Some of it has to do with the sheer complexity of water rights in California. We tried to merge multiple different structural approaches to water rights, which creates a lot of confusion and rent-seeking. My environmental economics professor used CA as a paradigm of bad law

If water use in California is 80% agriculture + another 12% landscaping, yards, etc, how come when there's a drought the state tells us to take shorter showers etc? Any actions being taken related to using more water for alfalfa than every human in the state?

Working on some data science projects in the real estate space.... this plot shows average rent ratios for coastal USA homes (average monthly rent / home sale price). Median ratio is 0.6%. Rule of thumb for a "good investment" is 1%

@mattyglesias @NateSilver538 It seems important to add that the economic toll is a choice too. There's no fundamental reason why markets must decline or wages are not paid; both of those are simply social choices, like much of the public health efforts. We could prevent economic costs of it if we wanted to.

This is one of those times when it's hard to adjust your priors fast enough, but there's a case that the past 72 hours should have made us more *optimistic*. The US's willingness to engage in mass shutdowns isn't something that could have been taken for granted, for instance.
