@SamLStandsUp OK, you'd expect to make more short carries than than 50m breaks. So the median would be small, but the odd big break raises the avg. I'd have thought it'd be more symmetric for posns., but the data above suggests maybe not. I guess it varies depending where they get the ball

@LCawthorne1 Sadly Tableau has decided to lose it all...joys of using the free one. I'll have to load it all back up and have another look. This is beyond the limits of my data know how though

Mega Thread: How important is field position in rugby and a new way to look at the data. Apologies in advance, we haven't got any clips in this thread but hopefully it appeals to more than just us nerds. All data is from Oval - the rugby data company. 1)

@SamLStandsUp OK, that would go someway to reduce it, what do you get if you compute the standard deviation alongside the average? Need to be careful as these look like asymmetric distributions (average doesn't coincide with the brightest area on the heat map). Is the skew always the same?

@LCawthorne1 It's based on at least 900+ observed possessions so that should remove some of that margin of error. There will of course be some though but, without checking, I think it's statistically significant

@SamLStandsUp What's the uncertainty on this figure? Given the large variance I can't see 6m being significantly below the margin of error.

6.08m you might say, that's nothing, that's one Will Skelton. And that's true...but we're talking about 6.08m every possession. If we take that average of 43 possessions a game that's 261.44m more Leicester have advanced than Bath in a match. And rugby is a game of territory. 9)

Today it was announced that Ofqual are proposing to keep the provision of a formula sheet in GCSE physics. Something I FULLY support. It has been opened for public consultation. The response form is here - make your opinion heard! @ChatPhysics ofqual.citizenspace.com/public/gcse-ma…

@SamLStandsUp To clear out you should get underneath and drive up. Ideally try to get your arms under theirs to dislodge their hold on the ball. If you try to use your arms its less likely to end up as a shoulder barge.

Very interesting thread here. The jackal has become a key part of the game from a defensive perspective but it does leave the jackaler incredibly exposed to hits like this. Hard to see how you can reduce these hits meaningfully without removing the jackal.
Progressive Rugby@ProgressiveRug

🧵Why bundee-gate is further evidence that the jackal (regrettably) has to be consigned to the past. It’s fair to say the Bundee Aki incident has caused quite a stir. In part due to the ferocity of the clear out and his….1/11

Postgraduate students in the UK now earn *less* then minimum wage! This is already an emergency not even taking into acount the impact of soaring inflation and rising energy prices. We need urgent action! @UKRI_News @GeorgeFreemanMP @beisgovuk 1/7

@93vintagejones Chernobyl happened in 1986 and we were still subsidising farmers in the UK until 2012. Now imagine if a device was set off that was designed to cause carnage rather than an accident. No one 'wins'. I have not seen anything from Truss to suggest she has given any thought to this

@93vintagejones So if someone strikes the UK with their arsenal, which would set the world back millennia, we should strike back and end humanity?

@OldBedians Forwards beat the Backs 145-7 to 142-6. Backs even tried a Mankad in their frustration at being bested. Highlights include, Pat Willis bowling Jod for a golden duck then Jod dropping a catch to win it #unsporting

@Emma_Alexander Short to do lists. Also, if you're having difficulty clearing your head to concentrate, set aside some time to think about what is troubling you. This way, you aren't ignoring any issues, but giving them some dedicated time later on. Allowing you to do some work in the short term

Anyone have any tips* for focusing on your research when things outside of work are particularly difficult? Likely will be for a while, and I need to get some things done within a couple of weeks, so extended time off isn't really an option. 😔 * cute animal photos also accepted

A short while ago our Head of Department asked me what title I would like. I offered "Professor of Charming Things". Got a letter today saying it'll be "Professor of Particle Physics" as of August. Guess I'll take that🙂1/2
