🚨 At CUNY’s Cuba Conference, Aid Organizers Say Donations Are Routed Through Cuba’s Ministry of Health and ICAP For all the talk of “humanitarian” solidarity, speakers at CUNY’s Cuba conference made clear that aid is funneled through the Cuban regime. Dr. Guzman of the National Network on Cuba and the New York–New Jersey Action Committee for Cuba claimed the requests come from bodies that “represent the Cuban people,” but also admitted that “these working groups that we’re part of are directly a request from ICAP.” Global Health Partners’ Bob Schwartz, who is also a member of NYC DSA, then spelled it out even more clearly. “We have a very strong working relationship with the Ministry of Health, and all of our donations are routed through the Ministry of Health.” He also acknowledged that activists do not control the final destination. “We don’t decide where they go, how they’re distributed.” Speaking specifically about the Venceremos Brigade, Onyesonwu Chatoyer, a co-chair of the National Network on Cuba and a chair of the Venceremos Brigade, described a parallel process in which brigadistas bring only what is requested by ICAP and distribute it throughout the trip, “only bringing what’s asked for from ICAP, and distributing it throughout the program as indicated by ICAP.” In other words, this was a blunt admission that so-called humanitarian aid is not reaching Cuba through anything resembling a neutral NGO pipeline. It is being funneled through regime-linked institutions from the outset, with activists following requests and priorities set by the government itself.

That is the position I expressed, and yet I was removed from the Religious Liberty Commission. Respectfully, it is difficult not to conclude that this commission does not truly care about religious liberty when a Catholic can be removed for faithfully articulating the Church’s teaching. Asking me to deny Catholic teaching in order to satisfy a political ideology is itself a violation of my religious freedom. As Pope Leo XIII warned, “To recoil before an enemy, or to keep silence when from all sides such clamor is raised against truth, is the part of a coward.” Whether I serve on this Commission or not, my voice will only grow louder for those being persecuted for their faith. I believe this appointment was ordained by God, and I will not abandon my Catholic faith to keep a position on a commission that has abandoned its mission. If my religious freedom is not protected, then no one’s is. Please speak up. Please stand up for Catholics. Be brave, Bishop Barron. The world needs brave men.
