I was sad to learn today that my friend & @8VC partner lost his uncle to COVID-19 in India. The pandemic is getting worse there, and they need more vaccines. In honor of his family, I will donate $50 for every re-tweet, up to $125,000 USD, to help with efforts in India. (1/2)

Huge implications. Avi Loeb speculates that #Oumuamua might actually be one object in a grid of "road posts" to aid aliens with navigation when traveling in this part of the galaxy. Mind blowing stuff. 4/4 youtu.be/plcc6E-E1uU

Turns out that #Oumuamua is actually *at rest* with respect to our local galaxy frame of reference (obtained by averaging over the motion of all of the stars in the "neighborhood of the sun"). This is true for only 1/500 stars. WE bumped into IT, not the other way around. 3/4

Excellent podcast by @lexfridman, interviewing astronomer Avi Loeb about #Oumuamua (the interstellar object that visited our solar system in 2017). Interesting things they discuss: 1/4

“An Indonesian cave painting of a warty pig, sporting a pair of large bumps on its neck, ranks among the oldest known artistic portrayals of an actual object or living thing, researchers say.” At least 45,000 years old!!! sciencenews.org/article/oldest…

CDC calls out face masks with valves -- they do not stop spread of coronavirus because the valve lets exhaled air out. Airlines are banning them. Others should, too. washingtonpost.com/health/2020/08…

242 million years ago, a creature called Tanystropheus looked like an underwater carnivorous giraffe. It was 20 feet long and had a 9 foot long neck. Humans have been around for only ~50k years. (50k x 4840 = 242 million) nytimes.com/2020/08/12/sci…

@IEX Flash Boys by Michael Lewis is one of my all time favorite reads. Discusses the birth of IEX, and how high frequency traders can go years without a single day of losing money (hint - not by investing). Thank you @BradKatsuyama for trying to level the playing field!

No one wants to be in an arms race with the fastest traders in the market. So we slow down all orders just enough for the exchange to catch up – with the goal of creating a level playing field for all market participants.

If covid-19 is really airborne, there are certain solutions we really need to focus on. That includes reducing the amount of time people spend in indoor spaces, increasing social distancing beyond six feet, prioritizing ventilation, or simply staying home. bit.ly/3gOM8V3
