Dear President John Mahama, Thank you for your continued advocacy in calling for reparations for the people of Africa, especially as we mark Africa Day 2025. Your voice is an inspiration to many across the continent who seek justice and dignity for historical wrongs. As we remember the brutal legacy of the transatlantic slave trade, I wish to humbly remind you and other African leaders that the people of Biafra, like our Ghanaian brothers and sisters, were deeply affected. Our suffering did not end with the abolition of slavery. In 1914, Biafrans were forcibly merged into the colonial creation called Nigeria, a union that ultimately led to a devastating genocidal war in 1967. Over 5 million Biafran lives were lost in that conflict—a tragedy the world too often forgets. Surely, if reparations are to be meaningful and just, they must include recognition of the pain endured by Biafrans—not only during slavery but also under modern neocolonial structures. Today, the most critical form of reparation we seek is Africa’s moral and political support for the recognition of the Independent State of Biafra (formerly the Republic of Biafra, and now the United States of Biafra). Mr. President, you will recall the painful episode of the "Ghana Must Go" deportations from Nigeria in the 1980s. Many Ghanaians were forced to return home, carrying their belongings in what became symbolic "Ghana Must Go" bags. Today, the tables have turned—Nigerians, weary of insecurity and poor living conditions, are fleeing to Ghana, drawn by your nation’s stability, economic progress, and respect for human dignity. We Biafrans long to walk a similar path—to build a nation that is secure, prosperous, and free. We know it is possible. But we cannot do it alone. Supporting Nigeria’s continued illegal occupation and domination over Biafra is, in essence, supporting the legacy of colonial violence. Nigeria, forged by the union of two British colonial figures—Lugard and his wife—continues to impose itself on peoples who never consented to such a union. To stand with Nigeria against Biafra is to deny the people of Biafra their right to self-determination—a right enshrined in both African and international law. Today, over 50 million Biafrans have said enough is enough by way of Self-Referendum. We ask for your understanding and your courage. We appeal to your legacy as a pan-African leader: please stand on the side of justice, of freedom, and of African dignity. Let Africa Day 2026 be the day when the people of Biafra celebrate in their own sovereign land, free from occupation, and finally embraced by their fellow African brothers and sisters.
