Some Republicans are rallying behind laws that would mandate posting the Ten Commandments in public-school classrooms and common areas, but doing so would be both unconstitutional and counterproductive, @ebruenig argues: theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

Remembering the great Ella Fitzgerald who was born on this day in 1917. Sometimes referred to as the “First Lady of Song” and “Queen of Jazz”, she was known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation and a “horn-like” improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.
As a child, Fitzgerald wanted to be a dancer, but when she panicked at an amateur contest in 1934 at New York City’s Apollo Theatre and sang in a style influenced by the jazz vocalist Connee Boswell instead, she won first prize.
During her long career Fitzgerald recorded more than 100 albums of several kinds of music. In addition to winning many Grammy awards for her recordings, Fitzgerald was honored with lifetime achievement awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Here, she is performing “Them There Eyes” with Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roy Eldridge on trumpet live in France, 1964.

Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave, but don't leave me
Look around, choose your own ground
Long you live and high you fly
Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be
Run, rabbit, run
Dig that hole, forget the sun
When, at last, the work is done
Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one
Long you live and high you fly
But only if you ride the tide
Balanced on the biggest wave
You race towards an early grave

At a tense Capitol Hill hearing, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was pressed on a growing measles crisis—and his response said it all.
More than 1,700 cases have already been confirmed in 2026, with lawmakers citing a 675% increase. The hardest-hit communities are those already facing barriers to healthcare.
RFK Jr. dismissed the surge as a “global outbreak” and called the criticism partisan.
But for families affected, this isn’t politics. It’s real.
