@GarrittyOf @JamesSurowiecki @EdwardK97329 Uh huh. I get what you're saying, but most pretty much anyone arriving at the southern border from south america passed through Guatemala, Honduras, or El Salvador, with whom the US has agreements.

Foreigners have a literal right under US law to seek asylum. 8 USC 1158 says, explicitly, that any alien who is in the U.S. or "arrives in" the U.S. can apply for asylum. Republicans could try to eliminate that right, but so far have not tried.

Starting Thursday, we'll be updating our revenue sharing incentives to better reward the content we want on X: We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, in neighboring countries and people who speak your language. While we appreciate everyone's opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivize gaming the attention of US or Japanese accounts and instead, drive diverse conversations on the platform. We invite creators to start building an audience locally. X will be a much richer community when there's relevant posts for people in all parts of the world.

@conor64 @AnnCoulter I'm not sure who is Ann Coulter's audience, but I'm pretty sure no one should take her seriously. She's sometimes entertaining, but AC is to political punditry as The Undertaker is to greco-roman wrestling.

@KeeperofReal16 @StefFeldman As you know, it's because you're not (just) paying for insurance. You're also paying for socialized healthcare and calling it "insurance."

@StefFeldman Ok, but I don't have any of that. What I do have is a $24,000 yearly health insurance bill for me and my family. I'm responsible enough to stay fit and healthy and, in return, I get to pay for the healthcare of people who don't respect me or themselves enough to do the same.

For the kids who are too young to remember, you used to be unable to buy comprehensive health insurance on your own if you had depression, acne, diabetes, or obesity. It wasn't just expensive; you couldn't buy it all!
Inez Stepman ⚪️🔴⚪️@InezFeltscher

For the kids who are too young to remember, you used to be able to get basically full, complete coverage above a max of $5,000 (aka “catastrophic coverage”) for 90 bucks a month before Obama made it “affordable.”

The straight app where men text first was Tinder. The straight app where women text first was Bumble. The app for gay men was Grindr. So it only follows logically that the app for gay women should have been Grumble

@wil_da_beast630 I think torture is awful. There should be no pleasure or spectacle in killing someone. It's a duty. But a firing squad, hanging, injection, beheading - all just fine. Do what you must, but quickly.

I do not think killing, or even torturing, (say) serial killers is horrifying at all. The large majority of people, when asked well-framed honest questions, just reallllly do not care much about this. If the pain of a serial killer affects you at all, you are not only evil, but also weak prey.* *I am learning to write like a lib

@Jube02 @greggnunziata "I identify this speech as racist" (whether accurate or not) is not a license to start telling other politicians what to say and do.

@Jube02 @greggnunziata Look, I'm not going to argue about the actual substance here, but she can say "this is racism, I don't support it, and Sen Tub should delete this and apologize." But tossing out orders to another senator is likely to solicit FU as a response (appropriately).

@Jube02 @greggnunziata My bad - you're right. I mixed him up with someone else. I still don't like it, but I'm also not sure what the appropriate response is expected here. Sen Gil. is in no position to be ordering around other senators. If she wants to complain about it, fine, but "FU" is...

@Jube02 @greggnunziata They're both republican senators. I would expect rep senators to help protect one of their own taking shots from every dem congressperson. Is this my favorite kind of discourse? No. But it's hypocritical to toss a bunch of strong insults out there and get offended by an f bomb.

@emmma_camp_ "women of a similar educational/economic background," Most men date and marry women they actually are around. Not a lot of high-income men hanging out at Applebees. College/grad school, work, church, via friends way more likely.

The “rich guys just want to marry Applebee's waitresses” meme is a “poor person’s idea of a rich person” thing. The guys who repeat this are really saying what *they* would do if they were rich. Actual high-income men want to marry women of a similar educational/economic background, shocker!

With a few notable exception, large age gaps are poverty coded. The people who are engaging in this Twitter discourse probably don’t know many high SES people IRL. They think dating 20 year olds in your 50s is impressive because they don’t realize that most men would be made fun of & shunned from polite society for this.

Some people seem to loathe Project Hail Mary because the author’s humor and casual, enthusiastic voice feel too simple and populist for their elevated tastes. That probably cements my status as a simpleton, because I adore it. The science is accessible and exciting, the problem-solving is a blast, and the story is so warm and uplifting that I can see why fans of dark and gritty sci-fi might cringe. That’s fine. There's plenty of fiction perfectly suited for deep thinkers who prefer nihilism and edginess. I’m just thrilled that such heartwarming stories of friendship and courage exist for people with Winnie-the-Pooh brains like me. ❤️
