Today, @RwandaNGOForum , in partnership with @RBCRwanda and supported by @TheENDFund , convened a Stakeholders’ Validation and Dissemination workshop focused on WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and Social Behaviour Change (SBC) to interrupt the transmission of Bilharzia and Intestinal Worms by 2027 in @BugeseraDistr and @RuhangoDistrict The workshop highlighted key findings from a needs assessment, identifying gaps in WASH infrastructure and communities most at risk of Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) and Schistosomiasis (SCH) due to poor sanitation. Stakeholders engaged in discussions on IoT-adapted interventions and co-creation strategies with local communities to enhance ownership and commitment to action. Hundreds of millions of $ of donor aid, even billions, are spent on pandemic preparedness (#PPR), but we are struggling to mobilise a few millions for the raging #diphtheria outbreak in West Africa.

#MSF "said treatment was being held back due to the global shortage of a specific anti-toxin drug, called DAT, needed to reduce the risk of death in #diphtheria patients." In practice, only 1/3 of MSF patients in need have received DAT.

This is a very welcome expansion of the ambitious goals to tackle these vector borne diseases on the African continent. Even with such significant funding these diseases can still be truly referred to as neglected because they affect primarily subsistence & displaced communities.
