Nicki Minaj said something at Amfest that was really profound. I'm paraphrasing, but she said, "just because I want little black girls to think they're beautiful doesn't mean I need to put down little girls with blonde hair and blue eyes." We all got wrapped up over the last few years in zero sum thinking. This was because the people who think they rule the world pit us against one another. @NICKIMINAJ rejects that. We all should.

Is it time yet to revisit all the early heralding of the internet's pure democracy, of the idea of "citizen journalists," of each and every voice being able to be heard being a good thing for our ability to find truth and govern ourselves? Because having spent a previous career in newsrooms, as part of the cold, organized monolith that was our gatekeeping mainstream media, I know that we were often too herd-like and centrist, sometimes misled and sometimes capable of publishing horseshit on incomplete or contradictory data. Sometimes we got it dead wrong. But every day, I remember that the editors read the copy and tried to verify what they could and avoid what they could not. And no one could pay us a fucking dime to say what we didn't think was the story we thought we had. Fact is, I once tried to sneak a piece of celery through some ranch dip at some politician's fundraiser because the guy was late showing up to make a speech and I was starving. Another reporter smacked it out of my hand: "That's Harry McGuirk's celery." We had an ethic. We believed in our role, however flawed and vulnerable to error our work product might at times be. So fuck the influencers, fuck the pimps who bought them, fuck their rancid whoredom, and fuck a media culture that has bypassed the gatekeepers at least trying to hold to a core ethos. The marginalization and eventual death of old-fashioned journalism and what has ensued is going to be what ends our republic. And everyone who championed some purist vision of a post-mainstream media future is now and forever, officially, a rube.

@BillAckman @Uber_Comms @Uber @dkhos You’ve been critical of journalists in the past so let’s review what you did here. Acting as a reporter, you posted an anecdote with serious allegations but you didn’t bother to seek out the other side. I’m sure you understand no respectable journalist would be that irresponsible

Thank you for the clarification. That said, I paid the tip first and then the driver’s screen that I photographed appeared afterwards. The drivers definitely believe that they are not being paid and they have no ability to audit whether the passenger has paid a tip or not. This seems like an easy problem to fix.

I took an @Uber today and for the first time was offered a NYC yellow cab. I thought good for Uber supporting the cabbies. I asked the driver about his experience with Uber and he surprised me by saying it was bad. He explained that even when the passenger agreed to pay a tip to the driver on the Uber app, the driver did not receive a tip and Uber kept the tip for itself. I said that this could not be true so he asked me to test it. When the ride finished I added a $5.00 tip. His screen showed that I paid no tip. The driver was right. In short, Uber is massively increasing its margins and profits in NYC by ripping off NYC cab drivers. I texted @dkhos Dara from Uber midday today and sent this photo of the driver’s screen. He did not respond. I like Dara, but this is really bad. I can only assume that Dara is unaware of this. Uber needs to immediately return the stolen funds with interest to the NYC taxi drivers and to other drivers in any other markets where they are doing the same and they should deeply apologize. And Uber should restate its earnings to reflect this overstatement of margins and profits. This needs to happen now. @ericadamsfornyc Mayor Adams, I am sure agrees.

I believe that cities like London & New York can come back strongly from the pandemic - because we've come back from big challenges before. Glad to welcome @MayorofLondon to NYC and discuss his new tourism campaign, Let’s Do London.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan@MayorofLondon

Great discussion with @MikeBloomberg about how we can work together to build US-UK trade and tourism, and help our cities, businesses and citizens thrive after the pandemic.

For years I worked in finance “service” journalism. One tic of that genre that a good editor taught be to avoid was a line like: “Ultimately the decision is up to you.” Like, no shit. Seeing a lot if this in Omicron explainers.

If paid leave is left out of this bill, I’m going to spend the midterms covering how suburban women who turned on the GOP over Trump are responding to Democratic governing in DC — especially after the pandemic

Actually, a first-year president doesn't HAVE to give a State of the Union. If they opt to, it's usually referred to as an "economic address." But there is no specific time/date for the OPTIONAL address.
Tricia Flanagan (R-NJ)@NewDayForNJ

The President is Constitutionally-mandated to give a State of the Union address which has been Jan/Feb since 1934 by invitation of the Speaker of the House. This year’s #SOTU has been listed as TBD. Can we get an update @SpeakerPelosi? Asking on behalf of the Constitution.
