BC government and City of Vancouver reach a deal to close 3 problematic SROs & supportive housing sites on the Granville Strip in downtown. Luugat's closure will be joined by two others, replaced by new housing elsewhere. #bcpoli #vanpoli #vanre dailyhive.com/vancouver/vanc…

Mayor Ken Sim@KenSimCity·
Yesterday, I signed an Agreement in Principle with Minister @christineeboyle to replace the Luugat Hotel, St. Helen's Hotel, and Granville Villa in the Granville Entertainment District with new housing located outside the area. For months, we have been calling for a clear plan to transition residents out of these aging buildings and into better, purpose-built housing with the supports they need. This agreement is an important step forward, helping residents move into higher-quality housing outside the Granville Entertainment District while allowing Granville Street to move forward as a safe and vibrant entertainment corridor. This is real progress for Granville Street, for local businesses, and for workers.

@TrevHal On behalf of our members, their thousands of staff & patrons, thank you and @mack4change & @kristina4bc for spending time on Granville Street today - seeing first hand the unsustainable conditions and chaos on what was once one of BC’s most important cultural corridors.

Today, I met with members of the Hospitality Vancouver Association on Granville Street to listen to business owners describe what they have to deal with every day. What they shared was deeply concerning. They told us conditions on the street are completely unmanageable. That it’s nearly impossible for them to operate their businesses safely. Owners and workers described repeated break-ins, constant disorder, open drug use and unsanitary conditions which leave staff and customers feeling unsafe. The people keeping downtown Vancouver alive are being forced to deal with a situation they can't control. What’s happening on Granville Street isn’t just a Vancouver issue. It reflects a province-wide public disorder failure. It needs to be fixed now. #bcpoli

Forty-six years ago today Canada saved 6 Americans in Iran. The mission, known as the Canadian Caper, saw the Canadian government and its diplomatic staff orchestrate a daring rescue of six Americans who had narrowly escaped the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

Prime Minister @MarkJCarney it’s time to cancel the F-35 purchase. The United States poses a real and present danger to the national security and sovereignty of Canada and its allies. Expedite the Gripens and encourage drone manufacturing at an industrial level. #cdnpoli

The NDP’s warehousing of people with mental health & addiction issues in SRO’s without proper security & support has left the door wide open to predatory drug dealers & violent criminals. This arrest was just the latest example of criminal activity in the NDP’s “supportive housing.” globalnews.ca/news/11586355/…

The BC Court of Appeal has ruled that DRIPA is an 'interpretive lens' through which BC laws must be viewed and measured. David Eby & the NDP must repeal DRIPA. If they are unwilling to do so, they should implement my Private Members Bill to amend the Interpretation Act & stop requiring provincial laws to be interpreted through the lens of UNDRIP/DRIPA. globalnews.ca/video/11564689…

Hospitality Vancouver Ass. was pleased to see so many business leaders, associations, elected officials & @VancouverPD @VPDChiefRai @KenSimCity standing and speaking up in support. The situation is dangerous & unsustainable for everyone, residents of the derelict SRO’s included.
Downtown Van@downtownvan

Thank you, @LauraBallance, for hosting this morning’s press conference at the Roxy on behalf of our Granville Street members. Today, we stood up for the businesses on Granville Street that have long shouldered the impacts of persistent street disorder and the complex challenges associated with the SROs in the GED. We are encouraged to see that residents of the Luugat will soon be relocated to housing that better supports their needs and provides safe, humane living conditions. These SROs were placed on Granville by the province at the height of the pandemic as a temporary emergency measure. It is now critical that the province expedite the relocation of the remaining SROs, as Granville Street is at a tipping point and urgently needs a sustainable, long-term path forward for everyone in the neighbourhood. @KenSimCity @VancouverPD @CityofVancouver
